In my Mini-Ripperton era — soft in spirit, ruthless in pursuit 🪄
I am a magnet for miracles & magical moments. 🌸✨

Booked & Blooming Tour has officially come to an end! Just months shy of the day I started fighting a life-threatening illness! I am still in recovery — and somehow, I am now a published author.

This almost didn’t happen 👀☕️

I believe words are spells — and in my darkest moments, I used mine to cast myself into wellness.
I named this book L.Y.O.N. — Lift Yourself Over Negativity because that’s exactly what I had to do.

Both fear and faith ask us to believe in things unseen and unknown. I leaned into faith when the path was unclear.

More than poetry, this is a spellbook of courage, written during my creative recovery.

My publisher reminded me “I am more than a survivor — I am a sur-thrivor”:
someone who transmutes trauma into testimony through the words of my spells.

That’s why I did this tour — to commemorate my book and all the bookings, places, and spaces where I’ve shared the words I used as spells to live like a L.Y.O.N. 🦁📖✨

At the time, I didn’t even realize how vital that was.
I thought solitude would be the solution to my stress. I thought the problem was “other people.”

But the truth?

It was people. It was community. It was connection that gave me the space to elevate.
That transformed my private thoughts into public productions, programs, and projects.

Now, it’s time to share the impact that being immersed in community has had on me.

So this month, I’m showing up in full bloom—performing, producing, presenting, and planting seeds of empowerment across every space I step into.

JV, you are my soul fam.
My friend to the end.

I came across this poem on YouTube — not for the first time, but somehow it felt brand new.
And the wildest part? I was actually there that day. It was my first ever time at — my first time seeing you perform. You were one of the last poets to go up, and you made that poem up while sitting in the audience. That night changed everything for me.

September 2012.
Just before my birthday.
I went shopping that day — birthday bags in hand — and still showed up.
I was told I should come to Rise… and I never stopped.

Thank you to — Matthew Reid — for capturing this clip that commemorated the first time I ever saw JV perform, and the first time I met him. A light being. A soul so radiant, so real.

It’s National Poetry Month, and I’ve been wanting to share a poem every day.
But truth is — I haven’t had the energy or motivation. I’ve been feeling low.
And yesterday… I couldn’t sleep.

I found myself watching old videos.
Memories.
Moments I didn’t even know were captured.
Because the truth is — we didn’t take that many pictures. We weren’t always filming. We were just being.
Talking. Laughing. Dreaming.

But this one — this clip — it took me right back.
To that moment. To your voice. To your presence.

I knew your birthday was coming up… but I didn’t realize how much it would hit me.
Today, I honour you — on your day of birth.
Which also happens to be my grandfather’s birthday — another great man who’s passed on.
Clearly, legends are born on this day.

It’s been five years.
2,116 days.
Since our last real conversation.

It got dark for a long minute while you were gone.
But your legacy — to your beautiful parents, your sisters, your niece and nephew — lives on.
In poems, in people, in presence.
Forever rising with you.

And as I prepare to release my book — a journey that’s taken everything in me — I want you to know…
I finished the last page this morning.
Because I couldn’t sleep.
I wrote my dedications.
And of course… you made it in there.

Thank you.
For seeing me as a poet long before I ever did.
For being the first person I trusted with my words.
For being light.
For being love.

Empowering the youth of today to become the leaders of tomorrow is an honor and a privilege. I am always grateful for opportunities to share the messages that have helped elevate me to where I am today.

I’ll be reading and performing pieces from my book, L-Y-O-N: Lift Yourself Over Negativity, my poetry spell book - encompassing words to inspire and ignite a positive shift in mindset.

Business smARTs: Grant Writing Essentials is a five-week virtual program designed to eliminate barriers and equip Black artists with the tools to secure funding and build sustainable creative careers.
