A major milestone for fertility care in Canada - the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) has published work from our Mount Sinai Fertility team, a national leader in Fertility Preservation, showcasing the country’s first case of ovarian tissue transportation and centralized cryobanking.

This new model of care expands access to fertility preservation for young oncology patients seeking future parenthood, regardless of geographic location.

Dr. Jennia Michaeli, Reproductive Endocrinology and Fertility specialist, clinician-investigator at Mount Sinai Fertility, and Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Toronto, leads the ovarian tissue cryopreservation and cancer survivorship programs. Her work brings innovation in research and clinical practice to improve outcomes for patients facing fertility-threatening treatments.

This is life-changing care in action – innovation that reaches more patients and strengthens outcomes across the system.

Proud Moment for Mount Sinai Fertility

We’re excited to share that a new paper published in The BMJ was co-authored by our own Dr. Claire Jones (MSF staff physician) and Dr. Akanksha Kulshreshtha (GREI resident, University of Toronto).

This evidence-based guide is designed to help primary care providers support patients with infertility concerns. It highlights:
- When and how to begin investigations in primary care
- When to refer to a fertility specialist
- Practical pathways for treatments such as ovulation induction, IUI, and IVF
- Reducing unnecessary tests while ensuring timely access to effective care

By providing clear, practical recommendations, this work strengthens fertility care in Canada and worldwide. We’re proud to see Mount Sinai Fertility continue to lead in innovation, education, and compassionate care.

What began as a student presentation on fertility preservation is now changing lives.

While studying in U of T’s MHSc in Laboratory Medicine, Madison Erb met Dr. Jennia Michaeli, a fertility specialist and mentor with experience in a groundbreaking technique: ovarian tissue cryopreservation.

A recent feature from the University of Toronto's Department for Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology highlights Madison Erb and Dr. Jennia Michaeli's work. Together, they helped build Canada’s first coordinated program, right here at Mount Sinai Fertility, giving hope to young cancer patients who want the chance to have children in the future.

Unlike egg freezing, this technique works for children and those needing urgent care. It’s already helping families across Ontario through partnerships with SickKids, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, and others.

“We’re training leaders who can build fertility programs like this,” says Dr. Michaeli.
Their work is a powerful reminder of how research, innovation, and compassion can make a real difference.
