The flowers are blooming, and so can you!

This prompt is asking you to reflect on how you see yourself. We can be our own worst critics, and we can also get in the way of our personal growth. Know that it’s in our nature to change. It’s up to you what that will look like!

Prompt:
Write three adjectives that describe your favourite qualities in yourself.
Write three adjectives that describe qualities you’d like to change in yourself.
Write three adjectives that describe qualities you’d like to embody.

There are no rules! Consider this a check in and a reminder that you are in control. Maybe give some examples or do some free writing for each of the qualities. For qualities that you’d like to change, don’t get bogged down in the negatives. Instad, consider the ways you’re already working on change, or the areas of your life where that quality isn’t as present. What might further improvement look like? Check back with these 9 qualities in a month and see what changed and what stayed the same.

Share in the comments: what’s one of your favourite personal qualities, or what’s a quality that you’d like to embody?

Life is funny like that.

Whatever your goals are, in pain management or in life, just keep trying. Work away at it one small bit at a time. What starts as overwhelming and seemingly impossible becomes manageable becomes accomplished. Don’t give up, and let success surprise you.

Let’s debunk some myths, shall we?

There’s a lot of misinformation out there, so we’re setting the record straight on some of the myths we’ve been seeing about chronic pain. When it comes to medical information a great rule of thumb is: if you’re not sure what’s true, ask your doctor. Not only can they tell you if it’s fact or fiction, they can also help you understand why. Since you’re the master of your pain management, more (accurate) information is always helpful!

What are some myths you’ve heard?

Your brain is an organ just like any other.

If you were frequently getting nauseous, you might adjust your diet. Approach your mental health in a similar way. Are you feeling stressed? Overwhelmed? Agitated? Apathetic? Take cues from your emotional or mental state: there’s likely something that needs to change. Your psychological well-being also plays a big role in pain perception. Go easy on and be generous with yourself. Support is always there for you if you need it.

What does your mind need today?

We’ve compiled the list so you don’t have to.

It can be hard to find the right words when you’re in pain. Perhaps when the flare-up has passed you can’t remember the details outside of it hurting. It’s a good practice to keep track of the qualities of your pain as well as the severity or frequency. Save this post, or jot down the list somewhere handy, and pick out the words that fit best whenever you need to. Use this for journaling your pain and for communicating with your doctor. You may also find this list useful if you meditate as a method of management, particularly during a “body scan.”

Did we leave off any important adjectives?

Pain behaves differently under different conditions.

Spring is close, but we’re not out of the woods just yet for cold or snowy weather. We’ve put together some very simple pieces of advice that can help reduce the effect of winter on chronic pain. Try out what we’ve suggested, if you haven’t already, and see if it makes a difference. Pain is complicated, but luckily battling the effects of winter is pretty straight-forward. So cozy up and look forward to the longer, warmer days that are coming very soon.

What winter adjustments did you make to help with your pain?

Getting enough, quality sleep is a crucial element in pain management.

Modern life seems to oppose our natural circadian rhythms with too much light in the evening and not enough in the daytimes. This can confuse our internal, hormonal clocks and prevent us from getting the sleep required to keep us at our healthiest.

In this video, Dr. Matthew Walker further explains this issue. He also provides us with simple solutions: expose yourself to around 40 minutes of sunlight in the morning, and dim your interior lighting a few hours before bedtime.

If you have issues falling asleep or staying asleep, watch this video and consider what small changes you can make to your daily "light exposure" to improve your circadian rhythm.

What steps are you taking to better your sleep habits?

Our modern lifestyle – characterized by low light exposure during the day and high light exposure during the evening and nighttime hours – has dramatic effec...
