Orthopaedic Therapy Clinic

Orthopaedic Therapy Clinic Since 1987 we have been Yorkville's premiere physiotherapy clinic. The clinic is comprised of physio The Orthopaedic Therapy Clinic Inc.

was founded in 1987 by Maureen Dwight, Registered Physiotherapist. Our mandate is to provide highly skilled therapeutic assessment and treatment to facilitate a rapid control of musculoskeletal pain and return to function. The Clinic is affiliated with the University of Toronto as a clinical teaching site for physiotherapy. The clinic is comprised of physiotherapists, and registered massage therapists. All therapists have extensive post-graduate experience and are committed to on-going education. A team approach is set-up between the therapists, client and referring agency/physician. On the initial contact a short history is taken to determine the most appropriate therapist to treat the clients problem. Treatment ranges from client education, direct "hands-on" mobilization to work conditioning and sports injury rehabilitation. An on-site therapeutic gym is available. The focus of the clinic is to teach the client skills to take control of their own pain. All treatment is provided in a one-on-one setting. A complete biomechanical assessment allows the therapist to determine causal factors and limit the likelihood of future reoccurrences. Recovery is facilitated when therapy is accessed quickly. As such wait times are minimal and an assessment can usually be booked within a few days. Assessments are booked for 1 hour and include a quantification of body biomechanics, lifestyle factors and predisposition to injury. The client is educated to become an active member of the team. Treatment sessions are booked for 1/2 hour and reinforce lifestyle/body movement changes as well as including appropriate treatment. Prior to discharge, a long term self maintenance programme can be designed to limit future occurrences.

In my last blog I looked at exercises for adolescents with scoliosis, but what about adults? How do you stay in shape, actively age and limit pain? Are there safe exercises for scoliosis? Up until recently there has been very little guidance for the adolescent who likes to exercise, and even less for the adult. Many people with scoliosis are nervous about exercising. I was recently at the World Congress of Low Back Pain in Antwerp (October 2019). Many of the luminaries were there and it was exceptionally thought provoking. I was disappointed that there were only a few presentations on scoliosis, however one of the presenters was Dr. Michele Romano from the highly respected SEAS (Scientific Exercise Adolescent Scoliosis) group out of Italy. After defeating Serena Williams in the US open she said, "I think your Biggest weapon is to be as prepared as you can.
