I am grateful to all the new parents who have welcomed me into their lives and their homes, as they begin their beautiful journey into parenthood.

This can be an overwhelming time for new parents, as they are fatigued and maybe feeling vulnerable. It truly brings me joy to watch them bond with their baby or breastfeed for the first time, because I know the difference that this can make in their experience.
To all of you amazing colleagues, thank you for collaborating, listening and being so supportive as we link arms to impact those we care about.
2020 is just around the corner, and I would like to wish you all a Happy New Year. May this new decade bring joy and peace into your lives.
I will see you next year as I continue to impact more families as a thrive beyond birth with online summits, prenatal education, one-on-one support, and an amazing group program!

It’s easy to get excited about breast milk. Just the basic fact that a woman can eat food and turn it into a complete food instantly tailored to grow that particular newborn is quite outstanding. But there is more to breast milk than what meets the eye and understanding the perfection of it could ...

Sleeping is one of baby's favourite activities. Sometimes trying to get a feed in can be difficult, especially if your baby was born a few weeks early. Their awake time is limited so finding ways to keep baby stimulated enough to feed well, without getting over stimulated and upset can be tricky. Some tactics include:
-burping and switching breasts
-changing the diaper half way through the feeds
- gently stroking baby's back and arms
-do skin to skin while breastfeeding -talk and sing to baby
-improve and deepen the latch

My next breastfeeding clinic is Tuesday November 19th from 10am to noon, .

Join us tomorrow morning!!

Have you ever just fed your baby, and then minutes later he or she is cueing for more? This may leave you feeling confused or maybe even frustrated.

Did you know that the behaviours or cues of a hungry baby and that of a baby with a full tummy can appear similar?
Rooting, hands to mouth, trying to suck are all cues for hunger. But did you know that sucking also facilitates feelings of calm, helps with digestion and may decrease pain.

I have often seen new parents wondering why their babies are so hungry even after they have just been fed. This is more common after top ups or bottle feeds. These babies, after a full bottle for example, may be wanting to suck to help digestion or because their tummies feel full.

If you KNOW that your baby has just fed well but seems to want to suck more. Offer them your finger, for 5 minutes of finger sucking, to relax them and to get digestion going. If they are still hungry, they will soon let you know after those 5 minutes and then you can offer some more.
My breastfeeding clinic is for all types of feeders and is on tomorrow morning, Tuesday November 12th, at Dupont Naturopathic Family Centre from 10am to noon.
Give us a call to register, 416 588 7789.

See you tomorrow!!

One of the most important things that a breastfeeding parent can do to prevent painful breasts due to blocked ducts, milk stasis, and mastitis is to know their breasts. IE. What they feel like when they are full vs emptied.
Following closely behind is the importance of emptying your breast throughout the day. This not only reduces the risk of lowering your milk supply, but can prevent a backup of milk and blockages in the milk ducts.
The easiest way to empty your breast is by breastfeeding on cue throughout the day. However there are times where extra emptying might be needed:
- baby having trouble emptying the breast
- increased supplementing with feeds
- unexpected longer periods of time between feeds
- heading back to work and continuing to breastfeed
Ways to empty your breast, besides breastfeeding, include hand expression, and using a breast pump. I would recommend a double electric pump for most efficiency.

My next breastfeeding clinic where all your breastfeeding questions can be answered, is on Tuesday October 29th from 10 a.m. to noon at Dupont and Shaw.
Come in for a full lactation visit, weigh-ins, or just to hang out. All are welcome!
