"Our feelings are decision-making algorithms that evolved to guide behaviour toward what was historically most likely to promote survival" - Maia Szalavitz, 2017. Dopamine: the currency of desire. Scientific Mind magazine v28, 48-53
What an important idea to recognize! The author talks about our feelings guiding us to survive as a species. I think we can also take that to mean individually, and interpersonally. How do our feelings influence us, given our own respective histories? These are questions we'll explore in therapy.

If everyday sounds like chewing, slurping, or breathing spark intense irritation or stress, it could be misophonia—a neurological condition where specific noises cause disproportionately strong emotional reactions. The response isn’t about volume; it’s often tied to particular patterns or mouth-based sounds, triggering feelings of anger, panic, or disgust.

Managing misophonia involves creating buffers: noise-canceling headphones, ambient background noise, or controlled breathing exercises. For those deeply affected, therapy—especially CBT—or support groups can help reframe reactions and reduce the emotional load. Recognizing the condition is the first step toward better boundaries and less internal chaos.
