The Well Living House is a simple yet powerful reminder to practise gratitude every single day. ☀️

One way to do this is to start your day by greeting the Sun or brightness and give thanks for all of Creation. 🌲

We acknowledge that this can be really tough to do sometimes, especially when we feel overwhelmed with loss, grief, mental health and/or social challenges.

If you can, pause and take even a couple of minutes to give thanks for the land, the water, the sun, the wind, the flowers, the plants, the animals, the people, and anything else you can think of.

Starting your day by sitting with this gratitude can help you feel more grounded, connected and supported. This is of course so great for our spiritual and mental health, which we know also influences physical health too!

Do you have a daily gratitude practise or ritual? Share with us in the comments below! ⬇️

The Well Living House is a Wáhta (the sugar maple) 🍁 teaching!

The kanyen’kehá:ka (Mohawk people) teach that Wánta (the sugar maple) is the leader of the trees 🌲 and the running of its sap is the first sign of spring and new life.

It marks the reawakening of Mother Earth after her winter sleep.

How can maple support my well-being? Isn’t it just sugar? 🤔 Many Kanyen’kehá:ka and other First Nations people also think of the sap water or even the syrup as a natural cleanser.

Of course, you shouldn’t consume too much of it but rather treat it as the potent and precious gift that it is. Maple syrup restores our energy and reminds us that there is sweetness even in the dark and cold times. Every year around this time, the Kanyen’kehá:ka hold a ceremony to give thanks to Wáhta.

December’s is to take a winter wellness walk! ❄️

We know that nature is medicine. Going outside can be much less appealing in the cold, dark season, but bundling up 🧣 and doing a wellness walk is so good for your mental, spiritual and physical health!

Get outside wherever you can, and practise greeting all the nature you see and giving thanks for it.

Give thanks for your body as you move, and let the fresh winter air bring you the gift of a clear mind. 🌬

Let us know in the comments if you’ll be doing this, or tag a friend to do a winter wellness walk with you! ❤️

This November, Well Living House is officially celebrating 10 years of research and advocation for Indigenous family health to provide tangible benefits and improvements to our First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities!

For the past decade, Well Living House has focused on applied Indigenous health action-research. This has meant co-leading research projects with community partners and translating relevant and useful public health and traditional knowledge to practitioners, program managers, and policy makers. And it has meant helping them use this knowledge to improve care and services for Indigenous infants, children and families.

Together with our Counsel of Grandparents, our team of health researchers, and community partners, we’ve worked in a good way to successfully complete many projects over the years- all of which, we are extremely proud of and grateful for.

We wouldn’t be able to do any of this work without our contributing researchers, generous donors, research participants, partners, and our Elders who guide and ground us in traditional ways of being and knowing.

We commit to furthering our good work in the future and look forward to all the positive changes still to come!

Swipe for our measures and milestones from 2012-2022, and a glance at our impact during COVID-19 over the last 2+ years.

About 30% of First Nations, Inuit and Métis living in cities have not had any vaccination for COVID-19.

Unvaccinated folks are still being admitted to the hospital for COVID-19.

We know hospitals can feel unsafe and difficult to trust, but if you aren’t getting vaccinated you are at much higher risk for severe illness and hospitalization.

Here are the latest vaccination options and don’t forget you can always reach out to a trusted Indigenous community organization to learn good information about vaccines and taking care in COVID-19.
