As we prepare for a new year, we’re excited to share our newly designed website, www.layla.care – a supportive space for people to explore, learn, and reflect as they begin or continue their mental health journey.

This redesign reflects over 5 years of growth, care, and community building alongside therapists, advisors, doctors, team members, and the people who trust us for support. From day one, our goal has been to guide people toward better mental health in a way that feels human, dependable, and less overwhelming.

We’re grateful for everyone who’s been part of the Layla journey so far. 💜

Special thanks to Kiandokht Khalili 🎨 at Star Child Illustrations for the thoughtful illustrations that bring warmth and storytelling to the site.

💭 Ever snapped at someone you care about, only to regret it later? Or felt anxious in a conversation and wished you could show up differently?

Moments like these aren’t signs that you’re “bad” at handling emotions — they’re chances to practice emotional intelligence (EQ).

EQ is the gentle skill of noticing emotions, understanding where they come from, and choosing how to respond in a way that brings more ease and connection.

✨ In our latest blog, we share four supportive skills — self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management — and simple ways to begin practicing them.

💙 What if you could have more tools to support someone who is struggling with their mental health?

That’s what Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is all about. Just like CPR helps in a medical emergency, MHFA gives you the tools to support someone facing a mental health challenge until professional help is available.
At the heart of MHFA is the ALGES framework:

A – Approach & assess risk
L – Listen non-judgmentally
G – Give reassurance & information
E – Encourage professional help
S – Support self-care

🌿 Interested in building your mental health skills?

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training is available through Opening Minds, helping individuals and organizations learn how to recognize and respond to signs of mental health challenges.

Ever finish a tough project, cook from scratch, or even get through tax season… and feel energized instead of drained?

That’s called learned industriousness. 🧠

When effort = reward, your brain starts craving the process itself. The more you practice, the more motivating hard work becomes.

👉 Start small: pick challenges that are tough but doable, and celebrate progress.

Procrastination can actually be deeply connected to how our brain processes emotions. Here’s a snap shot of the ways in which emotions and procrastination can be connected:

🧠 Procrastination can be an emotional response – It’s a way we cope with and respond to stress, fear, or overwhelm.

⚖️ Immediate Gratification can be a Default Response – When stress is high, our brain's emotional centre urges us to find immediate relief, which can be in the form of avoidance, or procrastination.

😨 Fear can fuel procrastination – Fear of failure, self-doubt, or not meeting high expectations can push our brain's emotional centre into overdrive, which urges some of us to avoid as a coping mechanism.

🎢 Low dopamine levels make it harder to start – Motivation and focus is linked to dopamine, and when it’s low, tasks feel harder and less rewarding, which increases our likelihood of procrastination.

💡 Want to break the cycle of Procrastination? Understanding why we procrastinate is the first step to managing it.

OVMA - Layla Care Mental Health Initiative 🌟

We are pleased to announce our new partnership with the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association (OVMA)! This initiative aims to break down barriers to mental health care for veterinary professionals, helping them access the support they need

Veterinary Mental Well-Being in Canada:
🐾 1 in 3 veterinarians feel burned out at least 50% of the time (OVMA, 2023)

🐾 26.2% of Canadian veterinarians reported suicidal thoughts in the past year—10x the national average

🐾 65% of veterinarians reported feeling overwhelmed by their workload

🐾 31% had experienced depressive episodes.

A Program Designed to Support Veterinary Well-being:
A cohort of Layla therapists have completed training from the OVMA to better understand the realities and complexities of veterinary care that impacts the mental health of the veterinary community.

The goal of the OVMA training provided to Layla’s therapist community is to inform and raise awareness amongst mental health professionals and care providers about the challenges, struggles, and realities unique to veterinary medicine, so that they can provide more effective mental health support. One of the barriers to seeking mental health support as a veterinary professional is lack of understanding of the complex stressors and professional responsibilities.

At Layla, we believe everyone deserves access to mental health support that’s tailored to their unique needs. This program reflects our mission to empower individuals to take control of their mental health with confidence and care.

If you’re a veterinary professional seeking support, connect with us today to learn more about how this program can help.
