School is coming..

Shannon Burton is one of our clinics Registered Paediatric Social Workers who has also had experience in the school board as a Social Worker/Attendance Counsellor. Shannon's method of therapy stems from these two areas of education and experience. From the ages of 6-18 Shannon uses the tool of reviewing report cards to assess the child or teens development on an educational level. She believes that with report card examination she can better help the patient through understanding their strong and weak areas. This is part of her initial intake and allows for a general understanding from others points of view. With this information Shannon can gauge the child's reading and writing, along with visual, verbal, and behavioural difficulties. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
With younger children ages (4-6 yrs), she Shannon specifically reviews "self regulation and well being" and "belonging and contributing" sections of Ontario report cards. To learn about the type of learning Shannon is working with, she will review "literacy and mathematic behaviours" sections as well as "problem and innovating". When report cards are unavailabe for Shannon's viewing or no longer relevant due to age, she will also review any psychological assessments and allow for the people closest to the child to offer their input. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Did you have a Cesarean birth? Did anyone ever share the benefits of massaging your scar?

As April comes to a close so does this month's Cesarean Awareness Month.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👋 Let's talk a out the benefits of receiving Massage Therapy on a C-Section Scar.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✔decrease localized pain.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✔breaks up adhesions within the scar and surrounding soft tissues.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✔reduces any restriction with affecting organs.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✔assists in muscle recruitment in your core muscles.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✔reduces the appearance of your scar, by lessening its size, as well as helping it to fade.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As a Massage Therapist our aim is to allow the scar tissue to properly function and limit any underlying restrictions. If left alone, scar tissue can become quite taut, restrictive and immobile. If left alone, it can potentially create problems down the road, such as low back pain. Massage is beneficial during the healing process but can also be done months or even years afterwards.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Cesarean is similar to many other operations in that they result in a surgical incision.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The full healing process involves mending abdominal muscles, fascia, and skin, and can take months or up to a year to fully heal. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The body’s innate ability to repair itself from surgery (or an injury) is to form scar tissue. Scar tissue is made of connective tissue making it stronger yet less flexible than say muscle tissue. Its haphazard formation accounts for greater structural support.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If there are no complications, most women receive the green light from their doctors at their 6-week check-up to massage their scar.⠀⠀⠀

I can't believe it's been 6 years already. Happy birthday 🎂

I can't believe it's been 6 years already. Happy birthday 🎂

Last week we celebrated our birthday, we turned SIX! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
While this last year has been a testament to patience, perseverance, and many many pivots, we are honoured to continue to provide our services to you. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Our birthday this year coincided with the news of a major downtown massage therapy clinic closing; it really shook our small Massage Therapy community. Toronto Bodyworks was a large facility, with a remarkable team of RMT's, that had been located in the downtown core for over 15 years. Many of our colleagues and peers have crossed paths with this clinic at some point. Sadly its another small business that is a casualty of COVID. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So, this year we didn't celebrate, rather we embraced gratitude. To have the opportunity to practice our talents, to work alongside friends and peers, and have a place to hang our hats. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Given the occasion, never pass up the opportunity to eat cake. There's always time for cake.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This delicious Vanilla cake with raspberry filling and white chocolate decorations came from The Cake Smith, a local Bloor West bakery a block down from us. Highly recommend!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
