“Health Canada is investigating complaints alleging inaccurately-labelled potency levels for some products sold by licensed pot producer” BNN Bloomberg's article speaks to the fact that label accuracy remains one of the biggest challenges facing Canada’s legal cannabis market. Unfortunately, some producers are disregarding accuracy for the purpose of reporting higher cannabinoid potency, by mislabeling their products knowingly or unknowingly, in choosing low-quality labs that report inaccurate and inflated THC and CBD values.

At Sigma Analytical Services, we take pride in the accuracy of our methods and results. We welcome more oversight by the regulators and appreciate Health Canada announcing they “… would take appropriate action to correct any potential non-compliance” on some of these unethical and illicit practices evident in the market, to ensure that the safety and quality of patients and consumers are never put at risk.

Sigma Analytical Services announced that it has received its Good Manufacturing Practice (“GMP”) clearance from the Australian Therapeutic

"The reforms are principally intended to enhance the quality and safety of medicinal cannabis products by introducing equivalent GMP requirements for imported and domestic medicinal cannabis".

Sigma Analytical Services has GMP clearance under TGA and can test cannabis and derived products before being exported to Australia.

Legalization in the cannabis industry, as a whole, is relatively recent. This means that there isn't much historical experience to draw from, particularly regarding the quality control and quality assurance aspect of cannabis testing labs.

Both cannabis labs and producers who disregard accuracy for the purpose of reporting higher cannabinoid potency are taking a huge risk, which does not go without huge consequences.

On Friday, the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board announced that it had suspended Centralia’s Praxis Laboratory’s certification to conduct quality assurance testing on cannabis products.
