March is Lymphedema Awareness Month 💙
And this week is Facial Nerve Palsy Awareness Week 💛
Two conditions that are often misunderstood - and often under-treated.
🔹 Lymphedema can happen after cancer treatment, surgery, trauma, and other causes. It’s more than just “swelling.” It can affect comfort, mobility, confidence, and quality of life. The good news? with proper assessment and treatment (including manual lymphatic drainage, compression, and exercise), it can be managed effectively.
🔹 Facial Palsy (including conditions like Bell's palsy, Ramsay Hunt, damage to the facial nerve post surgery, and other causes) affects facial movement, expression, speech, eating, eye closure, and emotional well-being. Many people are told to “just wait and see,” but specialized physiotherapy - including Facial Neuromuscular Retraining (FNMR) - can make a meaningful difference in recovery and long-term outcomes.
As a physiotherapist working in rehabilitation in Toronto, I see how much education and early intervention matter. Many people simply don’t know that treatment options exist.
If you or someone you know is:
✔️ Experiencing persistent swelling
✔️ Recovering from facial nerve injury
✔️ Struggling with facial tightness, synkinesis, or post-surgical swelling
Please know - you’re not alone, and support is available.
Let’s spread awareness so more people know there are evidence-based treatment options and hope for improvement.
Feel free to share 💙💛
