🍾 Scoliosis is a complex condition to treat, but great success is possible. In my approach I start by identifying the compression areas of my client’s torso. These areas lie within and below their scoliotic curves. Within these compression areas we will always find shortened, tight muscles that lack suppleness and vitality.

🤲🏼 I use manual treatment to encourage volume and vitality in these compression areas. This is accomplished by pressing into the shortened, tight myofascia and interfering with the unnecessary muscular contractions that are restricting. The force of touch is applied and increased gradually to avoid causing my client too much discomfort.

🌞 This client was thrilled with the change that occurred after just a one hour session. Not all sessions are so successful, but it’s great when it happens.

Here is the third of the three foundational Myofascial techniques I use to return my clients’ neck to full and smooth range of motion, because - along with complete range of motion - I also want my client’s neck to move efficiently and with no resistance.

You may have noticed that across the three techniques my touch is moving from distal (further from my client’s midline) to proximal (closer to midline). I go upper trapezius in the shoulder, to upper trapezius (and splenius capitis and cervicis) in the neck, to the mastoid process on the skull.

I tried in these clips to give you a sense of the thought process that goes into my touch. Along with understanding anatomy, correct client positioning and correct hand positioning, practitioners over time have to develop feel. I call my process for doing this “asking questions”. What is the width of this muscle? How does the texture feel under my touch? Where does the soft tissue let me in? Where does it resist? And how does this information change if I adjust my touch medially, laterally, deeper, more superficial?

“One of the most satisfying things I can do for my clients is optimize their neck range of motion. A loose and pain-free neck literally takes such a weight off our shoulders :)

My clients seek my help with all manner of musculoskeletal discomfort, injury and mobility challenges. From frozen shoulder, low back pain to plantar fasciitis. Even though every session is focused on my client’s primary need, I end almost all sessions with several minutes of neck work.

Our neck muscles are small, less dense than the bigger muscles further down our body, and respond relatively quickly to my Myofascial treatment.

The result: none of my clients have stiff necks.
