Have you ever sprained your ankle? This patient has rolled his right ankle (note the swelling). In this specific case it is a chronic issue usually with a couple sprains a year like this. Some ankle sprains are worse than others, many often seem to recover on their own in a couple days. No matter the severity of the ankle sprain it is important to rehab the ankle properly afterwards. When we roll our ankle we stretch or sprain/strain the muscles and ligaments surrounding the joint. These structures are important in supporting the ankle joint. Just because they are no longer generating pain doesn't mean they're functioning properly. With injury to these structures we loose proprioception (our body's sense of where it is in space) making the risk of re-injury/sprain much higher. Activities like running and even climbing stairs require ankle stability and proprioception because we are spending time supporting ourselves on one leg. Chiropractors are experts in assessing the function of the ankle as well as the joints above and below (hip, knee, foot) to determine a treatment plan that will help decrease pain, but more importantly restore proper function and reduce further injury.

Today is . You can prevent back pain by: getting active, maintaining a healthy weight, standing up straight to keep proper posture, stretching and consulting your doctor.

Opinion: Walking is the closest thing we have to a wonder drug. It's good for your heart, your mind and your bones. Walking, like many forms of exercise, makes you feel better – emotionally, mentally and spiritually. It keeps you young. …
Yet, we continue to build cities, suburbs and public spaces for life at 40, 60 and 100 km/h – for cars, not people. In other words, the unhealthiness of people and the planet – from the epidemics of inactivity and loneliness through to the horrors wrought by climate change – is largely by design. And the solution, by and large, is to redesign cities, to make them people-first places.
That is the powerful message that emerged from an international conference held last week in Calgary hosted by Walk21 (short for Walking in the 21st century). To read the full story, click the link on our profile page. 🖋André Picard

Cottage circuit workout 💪🏼🏃🏽‍♀️🌲Summer weekends can center around eating and drinking (and that's ok!) but don't forget to stay active, it isn't hard when the weather is beautiful like this past weekend. I like to create a high intensity interval workout that is quick and fun and can be performed outdoors. This weekend we did 3 stations of cardio alternating with 3 stations of resistance work, 1 min each, 3 rounds ... and then run straight into the lake 💦

Kinesiotape to the rescue! This patient was in a cycling accident and we used tape, not only at his opposite knee for an MCL sprain (not seen), but also for edema/bruising (seen here). The top two pictures are 1 week post accident, the bottom two pictures are 1 week post tape application. The theory behind taping for edema is that the tape lifts the skin separating it from the tissues below allowing better blood flow and draining of internal bleeding.
