Longwoods recently highlighted our leading results in the most recent report from the Hospital Harm Project, led by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) and Healthcare Excellence Canada (HEC).
In the latest data from the project, which studies preventable harm that happens to patients in hospitals and how it can be avoided by using proven best practices, we not only achieved our best-ever overall performance for rate of harm but are also the top performer among the province’s large community and teaching hospitals.

In one of Canada’s most linguistically diverse communities, getting a patient’s preferred language right isn’t a detail - it’s health equity.
Researchers at SHN examined how well hospital records capture what patients actually prefer to speak. The results: 86% overall accuracy, but only ~70% among patients who prefer a language other than English - meaning nearly 1 in 3 records for these patients needs improvement. Watch the short video to see why this matters for safety, understanding, and better outcomes, then read the story behind the research.

A new text message update service for patients is now available in our Emergency Departments (ED)!
This feature can text you non-clinical updates while you're visiting the ED, such as:
📍 When registration is complete
📍 When you’re called for triage or reassessment
📍 When a new order or lab result is ready
📍 When it’s time to return to the ED area after tests
You can sign up during self check-in at the kiosk or by asking an ED care team member during triage or registration. Patients can choose to receive messages themselves or add a support person, like a family member or caregiver, to get updates on their behalf.

At Scarborough Health Network, caring for you and your family is not just our job, it is our privilege.
Working with our many community and government partners, patients, staff, physicians, volunteers, and donors, Scarborough Health Network (SHN) is transforming patient care and outcomes today, and charting a new course to create a healthier tomorrow.
Across our three hospitals and eight satellite sites, our programs and services are designed around the needs of one of Canada’s most vibrant and diverse communities. We offer full-service emergency departments, diagnostic, surgery, rehabilitation, and geriatric care, as well as advanced birthing centres for moms, newborns, and growing families. We are leaders and partners in specialty paediatric, mental health, and oncology services.
Our care also goes well beyond our borders. We have North America’s largest nephrology program and regional community-based cardiovascular rehabilitation service. In addition, we are the Central East LHIN designated cardiac centre and centre for spine surgery.
We are also proud to be a community-affiliated teaching site for the University of Toronto, and a partner with a number of other universities and colleges, helping to train the next generation of health care professionals.
