Here are a few things you can try daily for managing your pain.

Not only will they help a bit in the moment but you will find that when you do these things consistently, you'll start having less pain, less frequent occurences, and just having more good days.

You don't have to do everything on the list but BE CONSISTENT.

Do it daily.

It's worth it.

Save this and come back to it when you run out of ideas or feel ready to add in a new daily activity for long-term pain relief.

I felt like I was on top of the world.

It wasn't a familiar feeling.

After having spent 8+ years with chronic back pain, a whole month had gone by without pain.

Not even once.

But there wasn't a quick fix.

It wasn't an easy road but I would do it again 1000%.

And you can do it too.

Did you know that you have complete control of your own health?

This changed everything for me when I stopped blaming all the things that started my pain and started focusing on what I could do instead.

Shifting your mindset to believe that you have the power to change your entire life by improving your health.

It doesn't have to be anything drastic either.

Making a small change to your daily routine such as drinking an extra glass of water, 5 more minutes of movement, or 1 minute of diaphragmatic breathing daily can have a huge effect on your back pain.

What are you going to try and commit to, knowing that you can literally change your health with small, doable changes?

Are you stuck in this cycle? You're not alone.

This is so common and I see it all the time in my practice.

It can be frustrating.

I know, I've been there.

You feel pain, you rest, it feels better for a hot minute, and then the pain comes back.

"Rest" can also include passive treatments like heat or ice, TENS, chiro adjustments, massage, and acupuncture for pain.

The same thing happens when using any of these treatments. If you get relief and it lasts long and your pain doesn't return, that's awesome!

But that doesn't work for most people when the pain has been present for more than 3 months.

Your pain doesn't need to be there daily for it to be considered chronic. Even if it's been coming and going for more than 3 months, there's a chance this cycle isn't working for you.

What does work?

Follow me .dainapatel for the long-term solutions you need to actually fix the CAUSE of your pain so it goes away instead of proving you with a temporary fix.

Tips for better sleep when dealing with pain:⁣

✅ Gentle movement. This may help to relax you before bed and remove tension from any tight muscles or anywhere you are carrying stress in your body.⁣

✅ Use pillows to support your body and maintain a neutral spine. This avoids adding more tension to some areas. Remember, it might be comfortable in that position as you fall asleep but if you tend to stay in that same position all night, you might wake up with more pain or stiffness. Try a pillow under the knees as you sleep on your back. If you sleep on your side, use a pillow between the knees and hug one near your chest. Make sure your neck is neutral as well by finding the right height of the pillow under your head.⁣

✅ Warm Epsom salts bath. The magnesium can be absorbed into the muscles and tissues to relax anything that is tight. The warm water may also help relax muscles. Combining this with lavender essential oil might be even better.⁣

Don't do these things:⁣

❌ Intense exercise. Too much activity might keep you up longer or cause you to feel sore while trying to fall asleep. I suggest avoiding intense movement at least 2-4 hours before bedtime.⁣

❌ Wake up/sleep at different times each day. Keeping a consistent schedule (even on weekends) allows you to fall into a routine ⁣

❌ Avoid screens. Blue light will keep you awake longer and mess with sleep. Avoiding news and social media that might be too stimulating. If you carry stress physically in your body, you may feel more stiffness, pain, or tightness while trying to fall asleep.⁣

You can't tell in this picture but I had sustained an injury the day before and woken up with an intense pain in my neck and upper back on the left that I'd never had before in that spot.⁣

We had plans to go to Niagara Falls the next day and I was a little nervous about going because I couldn't find much relief. ⁣

I knew what the issue was as this was something that had frequently happened to me in the past.⁣

Please note that I don't recommend self diagnosis, especially if this isn't your specialty 😝⁣

I knew that the problem was physical and stemmed from my ribs (1-3 for my chiros).⁣

I also knew that the worst thing I could do for the issue was to rest, even though it temporarily felt good to do so.⁣

Please listen to what your practitioner says for your specific condition.⁣

In my case (and typically ~99% of the patients I've seen in my practice over the last 7 years), movement was the answer.⁣

I walked over 25K steps this day.⁣

The old me wouldn't have wanted to do that.⁣

She would have been more careful and stuck to the better be safe than sorry method of doing some stretches and resting.⁣

I'm not saying this is what everyone should do.⁣

You do you.⁣

But my pain was at a 9/10 with movement before this day and the next day woke up with virtually no pain.⁣

Yes some movements were still difficult and it wasn't magic. But this was a fairly extensive injury so I wasn't expecting a miracle.⁣

Typically (for me) this would have taken a week or 2 without an adjustment and maybe 5-7 days with an adjustment to fully heal. I'm really aware of my body and what it typically needs.⁣

But the one thing I want to point out through all of this is that if I had "listened" to my body, it would have told me not to move and just sit for the weekend.⁣

Our body doesn't always tell us exactly what we need.⁣

We were made to move.⁣

Keep moving. ✌🏽

Consistency is 🔑 (and is always going to help you more than just doing that one thing here or there).

This is good news when it comes to get rid of pain because you only need to make small habit changes in order to feel a big difference.

It matters much more what you do daily compared to what you might be doing 1-2x/week.

So focus on the little things like:

⭐drink one extra glass of water
⭐walk for an extra 5 mins
⭐do one more exercise than you did last week
⭐eat one more vegetable
⭐have 1 less tsp of sugar

And keep going!

Make these your daily habits that you can sustain and keep up with forever.

The changes will come and yes sometimes it takes time but your body will thank you and you won't regret that feeling of better health (I promise!).

🌞Can vitamin D deficiency be a cause of chronic back pain?

There is a link between people with chronic pain and low levels of vitamin D but we aren't sure that it causes back pain.

It can however be a good reason to get your vitamin D levels tested at your next annual physical or routine blood test (costs about $25-40 in ON but covered by OHIP if you have certain conditions).

Low vitamin D is linked to many chronic health conditions and many North Americans are deficient in it.

You can convert vitamin D from sun exposure too but not everyone converts well so supplementation may be needed.

☀️See your doctor for dosage. Remember that too much vitamin D can be toxic and you should always consult your doctor prior to making any changes to your health or taking a supplement/changing the dose.

Instead of trying solutions that get rid of the pain temporarily or that aren't customized to you, why not try these better options:

✔️STRENGTHENING EXERCISES: Instead of stretching that provides only temporary relief, strengthen the area surrounding your pain to provide your body with more support. Also, look at the areas above and below the area of pain.

✔️MOBILITY EXERCISES: This specifically targets the joints that need more movement. We need to increase ROM through the joint since we spend most of our day doing the same motions (hello repetitive strain!). Think of these as an active stretch.

✔️NATURE WALKS: This one is especially beneficial when you are mindful. A great way to help manage stress and relax any tension.

✔️WORK WITH A PRACTITIONER: It's a lot easier to work with a licensed professional that can significantly speed up progress and healing and get you faster and long-lasting results.
