Motivational Music Monday

Song: Understand
Artist: Shawn Mendes
Album: Illuminate (2016)
Genre: Pop
Key Lyric: “I really wanna understand who I am…”

Breakdown: I’ll just let Shawn Mendes’ song interlude speak for itself:
When you wake up, your whole world's flipped
It's just different, and you gotta, you know you gotta, you gotta go with it
And, that's just simply growing up
And not see it in a negative way
You have to see it as it's been given to you
I mean, as much as times can be crazy
You're gonna feel like that's where you're supposed to be
You're not going to feel out of place anymore
You're going to feel like that's where you meant to be
You don't have to pretend that it's easy all the time
You just let it go, and, and grow with it
And you can't hold on, to the old you, or the old this, or the old that
Because, you know, you change, and it's not changing in a bad way
It's just changing because that's what happens in life
You grow up, everyone moves on
You're just learning
You stay true to yourself
Changing isn't a bad thing, it never was
But at the end of the day, you know?
You're the same person
And, and where your heart is
That doesn't change.

Song: Shake it Out
Artist: Florence + The Machine
Album: Ceremonials (2011)
Genre: Alt Rock
Key Lyric: “I’m ready to suffer and I’m ready to hope, It’s a shot in the dark aimed right at my throat.”

Breakdown: So there are two truths to this song. The first is it’s literal explanation. Florence Welsch was hungover and wrote a song about trying to shake off feeling like junk so she could get to work. The second truth is more of the metaphorical explanation; in order to let go of past regrets, you have to be prepared to face them, forgive yourself and move forward. Shake off whatever hold they may have over you. This is why I love the key lyric so much, because it captures both versions of the song. Being ready to suffer and ready to hope acknowledges that growth is not easy, and it’s not comfortable. If you’re battling demons (“its hard to dance with the devil on your back”) you have to be prepared to forgive yourself, which can be the hardest thing to do. Meanwhile a shot in the dark aimed right at my throat is not a shot in the dark in the sense of a gun but literally a shot of alcohol burning her throat. In looking for heaven Florence found the devil. In trying to have a good night out, today she is hungover. In trying to get over regrets of the past, she has found the pain of facing her demons. The song is a brilliant two way street, with the most important lesson being if something is dragging you down, it’s best to shake it out. Remember that feeling better has it’s price.

Every demon wants his pound of flesh.
