Good morning everyone!

As we are heading into the holiday and coming to the end of 2021, I encourage all of us to take a few minutes to check in with ourselves from a mental health perspective.

In addition to checking in with yourself, also take a few minutes to check in with your close ones and see how they are doing this time of the year as we wrap up another year!

Happy Friday 😁!
Sharing a little daily dose of DBT - Dialectical ways of thinking. Sometimes in life, we can feel a sense of *stuckness* in the situation we are in and that there is only one way of interpreting it.

Dialectical way of thinking tells us that two concepts which appear opposite can be true at the same time and they can both be correct.

For those of you who know me may know that I am an advocate of knowledge translation, research, and education.

I just wanted to share an upcoming Conference called: Embodied in Color which will take place on December 11th, 2021 (Saturday) at 12:00 pm EST. The conference is an opportunity for BIPOC clinicians/students/mental health professionals.

P.S. I don't have any personal affiliation with the conference but wanted to share!

Students are able to attend for free and there is a sliding scale available also!

The first virtual wellness conference for clinicians of color to build community and heal together.

Many clients I have seen to date often ask the question: How do I measure progress in therapy?

My response to my clients is normally: That is a really good question and it is one where the response isn't as straight forward as say managing an infection or a physical injury. For example, if we have an infection, we get prescribed antibiotics and after the course of it, the symptoms will be gone and we can then tell ourselves that we have recovered.

Psychologically, the road and process to recovery isn't as straight forward. Sometimes, one may feel like they are moving forward, but there are also times where they feel stuck, stagnant, overwhelming and difficult. This is often time the process of therapy and it is completely okay because process isn't linear.

How many of us out there can relate to this?

A snapshot capturing what someone with anxiety is experiencing in their mind and this runs 24/7.

Overthinking many things which could seem trivial to those not relating to this but on a daily basis, these thoughts carry a lot of weight for them.

Overthinking
Worry/Anxiety
Helplessness
Feeling lost
Self-criticalness

Happy Friday Everyone!

I came across this comic by Kate Allan and it really resonated with me. So So So many times, I want to say something along the line of what is portrayed in this comic to my clients.

The one little revision I want to tell not only my clients, but anyone of you out there or ones you know contemplating on seeking out mental health support is that you're not doing this alone, I promise :) Either I or your therapist will go through this journey with you ~

As a therapist who works with clients with various forms of trauma - ranging from PTSD in the First Responder population to Developmental, Complex and Intergenerational Trauma, I grew to really develop a strong interest in understanding the impact trauma has on us. Recently, I started reading the book below and it really speaks to some of the themes I witness in some of the clients I have encountered.

Myself being a BIPOC therapist, I understand from an immigrant and cultural respective about different ways parents may show their affections toward their children, which, at times, unfortunately, may not be perceived by the child in a similar sense.

Overall, I've been really enjoying this book and highly recommend :).

I always share with my clients that in order for us to heal, we must first understand and be self aware.

It's been a month since many students have since returned to school after two years. A portion of my clients are high school and university students and as a mental health clinician, I most definitely see the increase in anxiety, stress and depression. I would most definitely agree increased mental health support is much needed due to the ongoing shortages and affordability.
