What happens when you take the St. Demetrius team out of the home and into a room with 100 speakers, 45 education sessions, and 80+ exhibitors?

You get this....

This week we attended the 2026 AdvantAge Ontario "Advancing Senior Care" Convention in Toronto — and it was everything we hoped for: incredible learning, meaningful connections with peers from across Ontario's senior care sector, and a real reminder of why we do what we do.

But here's what stood out most: the chance to step away together. To learn together. To share a coffee, debate a session, and dream up what we want to bring back home.

Because at St. Demetrius, advancing senior care isn't just about policies and best practices. It's about the people doing the work — and giving them the time, the spark, and the connections to keep doing it brilliantly.

Grateful to AdvantAge Ontario for an unforgettable few days, and even more grateful to our incredible team.

This week is National Volunteer Week (April 19–25, 2026).

For more than 30 years, volunteers have been the foundation of our organization—helping to create it, build the Ukrainian Canadian Care Centre, sustain it through the years, and continue to shape and strengthen our organization's growth and evolution.

We are deeply grateful to our volunteers - to those who give their time at the Ukrainian Canadian Care Centre, bringing warmth, care, and companionship into the daily lives of our residents; to those who support our St. Demetrius Community Programs, creating a true sense of community, belonging, and connection for seniors aging in place; to those who contribute to fundraising efforts, events, and the gift shop, helping sustain and strengthen all that we do. We extend a special thank you to our Board of Directors, whose thoughtful stewardship and forward-looking leadership continue to guide and safeguard our future.

Thank you all for your selfless service. Your kindness and dedication bring a deep sense of community and belonging to the lives of the seniors we serve each and every day, inspiring us and strengthening our ability to continue to grow, innovate and deepen our impact.

WE DID IT — and our team made it happen.
St. Demetrius (Ukrainian Catholic) Development Corporation is officially Great Place to Work® Certified.
96% of our employees say St. Demetrius is a great place to work — compared to just 60% at a typical Canadian company.
This certification is not given — it is earned, and it is earned by the 253 people who show up every day to care for our residents and tenants with compassion, accountability, respect, and excellence.
To our knowledge, St. Demetrius is the first Ukrainian Canadian seniors' care organization in Canada to earn this recognition — a moment of pride for our community, our heritage, and the families we serve.
To our team: thank you for your work, dedication, and heart. This recognition belongs to you. 💙💛

Residents and their families came together in our Winter Garden for a joyful Easter lunch, where every detail—from the decorations to the elegant table settings and the thoughtfully prepared meal—was beautifully presented, reflecting the care, dedication, and creativity of our staff.

In Ukrainian tradition, Easter is a profound celebration of renewal, faith, and life’s blessings. The Easter lunch, shared among family, is a cherished moment of togetherness, where tradition, memory, and love are gently carried forward from one generation to the next.

From our kitchen at the Ukrainian Canadian Care Centre — 152 p***as, prepared from scratch by our dedicated Food Services team, one for each of our 152 residents.

In Ukrainian tradition, p***a is the centerpiece of the Easter basket, symbolizing life, renewal, and the joy of the Resurrection. At the Easter table in Ukrainian homes, it remains at the centre — bringing together family, tradition, and the blessing of the season.

We are proud to carry this tradition forward for those in our care.

Watch how it all came together.

Christ is Risen! He is Truly Risen!

On this day of Resurrection, we are reminded that even the longest night gives way to dawn. Easter is a celebration of renewal — of faith restored, of spirits lifted, and of the boundless grace that sustains us through every challenge.

For more than thirty years, St. Demetrius Development Corporation — through the Ukrainian Canadian Care Centre and St. Demetrius Senior Apartments — has been a home built on love, service, and the traditions of our Ukrainian heritage. What began as a dream rooted in faith has grown into a living testament to what a caring community can achieve. We are deeply grateful to all who have made our organization possible and who continue to stand with us in supporting the seniors we serve, with commitment and heart.

As we gather in celebration, our hearts remain with Ukraine and its courageous people. Their unwavering spirit in the face of adversity embodies the very essence of Easter - that hope endures, that light prevails, and that no darkness lasts forever.

May this Easter fill your hearts with peace, joy, and renewed hope!

We were honoured to take part in the "Stolen Fate" Exhibit at Toronto City Hall — a powerful public exhibition organized to bring forward the voices of Ukrainian artists and to shed light on the human cost of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The exhibit featured 24 compelling canvases by Ukrainian artists, portraying the enduring resilience of the Ukrainian people.

Present to the event, among many other guests, were His Excellency, Most Reverend Bryan Bayda, Bishop of the Ukraihian Catholic Eparchy of Toronto and Eastern Canada, and Mr. Oleh Nikolenko, Consul General of Ukraine in Toronto.

For us, being there was deeply meaningful.

As part of the exhibit, we hosted a table featuring artwork created by the seniors we serve — participants in our community program as well as our residents. Their pieces stood alongside those from Ukraine, forming a quiet but powerful dialogue across generations.

Many of our seniors carry lived experiences of displacement, loss, and rebuilding. Today, they have created a life here — yet their stories echo the very themes expressed in this exhibit. They know what it means to have life suddenly altered by war — and yet, to choose resilience. To rebuild. To preserve their traditions. To continue creating.

We were truly honoured to stand alongside the artists of Ukraine —
and to share the voices of the seniors we serve within that story.

A Morning of Gratitude — a moving beginning to our 30th Anniversary Year

On March 25 (Благовіщення), the Annunciation of the Lord, we returned to where our story began — with those who stood with us when the Ukrainian Canadian Care Centre was still only a dream.

With Fr. John and Fr. Terry, the Knights of Columbus Sheptytsky Council, the St. Demetrius Ukrainian Women’s League, and devoted community members and parishioners, we gathered to honour the faith, leadership, and shared effort that made this Home possible.

Guests were welcomed by the Knights of Columbus in their Honour Guard — a dignified, ceremonial greeting that set a deeply meaningful tone.

As guests entered our Boardroom, they welcomed into a space where every detail reflected care, tradition, and the spirit of our cultural heritage and community. The décor, food, and display — thoughtfully led by Iryna Vorotylko, Director of Operations, were uniquely beautiful, exquisite and artistic, setting the tone for heartfelt sharing.

Through shared memories and reflections, we were reminded:
a Home with a Heart can only be created and sustained by a community with a heart — from the community, for the community.

Fr. John reflected on the early vision — on the faith, conviction, and leadership it took to lobby and advocate for a place where our seniors could be cared for within their own community, with dignity and belonging.

Fr. Terry spoke about the importance of nurturing community — in those early days, for today, and for future generations. He reminded us that we must keep the spark alive and come together to carry it forward.

Paula Lytwyn, volunteer and daughter of Paul and Elsie Yarmol — active parishioners who were closely involved in the early days — spoke about the passing of values from one generation to the next.

Staff who have been with the Care Centre since the very beginning, for over 30 years were also part of the event and were invited to share what this place has meant to them.

Lyda Myshkevich , Senior Clinical Team leader, reflected on how humbling it is today to serve those whose example first inspired her in those early days.

Nika Goutor, President of St. Demetrius Ukrainian Catholic Women's League, (UCWLC)" and Recreation Assistant at the Care Centre reflected on how the UCWLC volunteers she met at the Care Centre inspired her to begin volunteering and join the league.

And resident Rose Martyniw touched every heart with her words:
“You turned that dream into reality. And this is my reality today… and it feels like living a dream. This place is a blessing in the life of a senior like me."

We closed with “Боже Великий” (Great God) — singing together, reaffirming our shared community values and unity.

"We remain committed to carrying forward the community spirit, values, and legacy of our founders, ensuring that what they began is honoured, safeguarded and continued for generations to come," said Irena Dounets, CEO in her closing remarks.

🌷 Our First-Ever Easter Bazaar - A Celebration of Artistry and Tradition to Remember 🌷

There was so much to enjoy… and so much to experience.

For a few beautiful hours, we stepped into a world of tradition, artistry, and community, where the richness of Ukrainian Easter heritage came alive in the most heartfelt way.

From unique artisan creations and exquisite handmade art, to pysanky, candles, textiles, and touches of spring, every moment invited discovery, creativity, and inspiration.

There was also the joy of taking home beautiful artisan creations, each carrying the spirit and magic of Easter.

Beyond all this beauty was that special warm sense of togetherness, born from experiencing the richness and vibrancy of tradition together across generations: trying your hand at Petrykivka and threads pysanky-making techniques; enjoying the beauty of artisan creations, taking pictures at a beautifully curated corner- the best photo opp to step back in time, and all those precious moments of connecting with old and new friends to share the joy of immersing in artistry and tradition.

This was our very first Easter Bazaar…
and the question we heard again and again was:

“You’re going to have it again next year… right?”

This special day was made possible through the dedication, preparation, and care of our incredible volunteers and staff.

A profound, heartfelt thank you to our volunteers and everyone who came and made the day so vibrant and full of life.

💛 If you missed it—there is still a chance to experience a glimpse of it.
