February 24 β Honourimg the resilience of Ukrainian people, commemorating those who have lost their lives
February 24 marked four years since the brutal, illegal, and unjustified aggression of Russia against Ukraine. On this solemn day, we gathered in prayer at both St. Demetrius Senior Apartments and the Ukrainian Canadian Care Centre, united in remembrance, reflection, and hope.
At St. Demetrius Apartments, tenants and staff came together for an afternoon of commemoration, honouring those who have fallen and drawing strength through prayer, song, and poetry. For many in our community β staff, tenants, residents, and their families, and volunteers β the war is deeply personal. Many have loved ones in Ukraine; some have lost friends and family members, while some have family members and friends who serve on the front lines.
βWe must continue to keep strong faith, to pray, and to support Ukraine through acts of kindness and solidarity,β shared Fr. Palisa. βEven if what we can offer seems small, together it makes a difference. Despite unspeakable aggression and constant attacks on civilians and infrastructure, Ukraine has endured β and will continue to endure.β
The commemorative gathering at St. Dementrius Senior Apartments included prayer, songs and poetry reading by Ukrainian poet Volodymyr Kravchuk who read his poems and talked about his own experience of the war in Ukraine. This special event was initiated and organized by the team of the St. Demetrius Senior Apartments, under the leadership of Anna Orlov, Director of Housing.
β On this day, we remember and honour those who have lost their lives, and we express our solidarity with all the people of Ukraine. Through the power of song, poetry and art we are reminded of the very soul of Ukraine - resilient, loving life, sustained by faith in humanity. We draw our strength from our very humanity, from the unbreakble spirit of Ukrainians, from our shared faith in humanity " shared Anna Orlov.
As long as we gather, stand together, and provide support, hope lives on. Ukraine will persevere. Faith and humanity will win. ππ
