Here is a great example of why I tell my clients’ parents to be detectives and try to guess what their child is saying. Often it sounds like nonsense jargon but they are actually using real words. The joy on this child’s face shows the power of communication.

It's not always easy to ask for something when you can't speak yet.

I get asked this question a LOT! Sometimes parents expect their child to say a word clearly before they “count”- and that’s just not true! My favorite example is the child who says “ba” for both balloon and ball! It sounds the same, but that’s TWO words! It’s all about the meaning - not how it’s said! And yes, animal sounds count as words, as well as seemingly random sounds such as a child who says “ap” every time they see a cat!
