Things have been quiet here on our social media pages, but for a very sweet reason - we’ve been soaking up time with our newest little addition at home! πŸ’•

After four wonderful years of providing speech-language services through Kootenay Speech Language Pathology, I am stepping away from private practice to focus on my growing family. I’m so grateful for the amazing families I’ve had the privilege to work with. Thank you for your trust and support - it has meant the world to me! Wishing you all the best on your speech and language journeys!

Working on complex sentences βœ…

I recently listened to a podcast featuring Dr. Karen Dudek-Brannan and loved her approach to vocabulary instruction. She says that we can't just teach children what the words are and their meaning (semantics). We need to also teach them HOW to use those words (syntax). If a child doesn't know how to use their vocabulary functionally, then what's the point?

THIS is why we work on combining sentences and creating complex sentences. Pretty cool, right?! πŸ‘Œ

Reading is such an important part of language development! Reading together regularly helps build communication skills such as auditory comprehension, expressive vocabulary, and memory. It is a great way to spend time together and develop important skills that will serve your child as they develop their communication skills!

What are your favourite books to read together?

CAKE! πŸŽ‚

I love using this book to target the K sound, particularly with kids who are ✨fronting✨. What is fronting?
Fronting is a phonological process where children consistently replace sounds made at the back for the mouth (e.g., the K sound or the G sound) with sounds made at the front of the mouth (e.g., the T sound or the D sound). For example, they might say tea β˜• when they mean key πŸ”‘. This error is developmentally appropriate up until about age 3. If this error persists past age 4, you will want to see a speech language pathologist to help remediate it!
