Across Manitoba, emergency departments and urgent care centres are available to care for the physical and medical needs of people who have been harmed, including by intimate partner violence. HSC’s Sexual Assault and Intimate Partner Violence Program offers a private, safe, and compassionate environment for patients.

“Music activates both sides of the brain and is a tool that allows us to connect with others pretty quickly. Because of that, we’re able to see positive results in a short amount of time which is helpful in acute care," said Allison Shiach, Certified Music Therapist, Health Sciences Centre. "Each session will look different and is based on who attends and where they’re at in their healing journey.”

Manitoba’s health system celebrates Music Therapy Month, recognizing the exceptional work of our music therapy professionals and the meaningful and healing interactions they provide for patients. Visit https://ow.ly/8OGa50VntGZ for Allison's full story.

Although rare, Dr. David Peretz, Hepatologist and Gastroenterologist at HSC and Director of the Manitoba Liver Transplant program has a personal connection with Wilson disease and credits his history with it to making him a better doctor.

“A family member in the United States unfortunately passed away from Wilson disease while waiting for a liver transplant,” shared Dr. Peretz. “It still haunts me a little bit today. To diagnose Wilson disease, you need to catch it early and think outside of the box.”

About one in 30,000 Canadians are living with Wilson disease, a rare genetic autosomal recessive disease that causes copper to build up in the body. Our bodies need copper in small quantities to generate energy, make connective tissues, maintain the nervous system and activate genes. With Wilson disease, the body accumulates large quantities of copper affecting liver and brain function.

If it is not caught early enough and treated, the disease can lead to life-threatening organ damage.

“Wilson disease is tricky and unpredictable – a good masquerader of other diseases,” described Dr. Peretz. “Wilson disease should be renamed to Wilson syndrome. I say that because every patient I have met presents differently. People can come in with one possible diagnosis and we may not think of Wilson disease right away. It is still a very rare condition, hard to diagnose and hard to treat.”

Dr. Peretz is one of the seven hepatologists in Manitoba who actively co-support Wilson patients.

Tomorrow is Rare Disease Day, an opportunity to raise awareness and support those on rare medical journeys. Visit https://ow.ly/OnNr50UZPzG for Dr. Peretz's story.

Our Story

More than 8,000 staff, physicians and volunteers care for patients at HSC Winnipeg. Highly-skilled interdisciplinary teams provide complex, specialist (“tertiary”) acute care, including diagnostic, outpatient and inpatient services to adults and children across Manitoba, north-western Ontario and Nunavut.

HSC is a Shared Health facility, and is Manitoba’s provincial tertiary centre for trauma, transplants, burns, neurosciences, complex cancer care and pediatric care. Every clinical hospital-based service available in the province is offered at HSC, with the exception of cardiac surgery and eye surgery. This means the majority of Manitobans’ tertiary care is provided here, regardless of which community our patients call home.

HSC is also a teaching hospital, formally affiliated with the University of Manitoba and other post-secondary institutions. Students learn from us at the bedside or in the lab, and many of our staff teach and conduct research at these institutions.
