April is Stress Awareness Month

Stress is a natural response to the challenges or demands we face. While some stress can motivate us, ongoing or unmanaged stress can have an impact on our health and/or our mental wellbeing.

Stress shows up in many ways, and recognizing these signs can help us take steps to protect our wellbeing before life’s challenges become overwhelming:

🔵 Physical: Headaches, tension in your body, trouble sleeping, fatigue, or upset stomach

🔵 Behavioral: Changes in eating habits, withdrawing from others, or feeling disconnected

🔵 Emotional: Feeling anxious, irritable, or overwhelmed

🔵 Mental: Difficulty concentrating or making decisions

We've gathered some stress relief techniques to help you handle stress in the short term. Swipe to learn about 4 grounding and breathing exercises.

Harm reduction is a proven public health approach that reduces the adverse health, social, and economic outcomes related to a variety of risk-associated activities. HSC sees many patients seeking help related to substance use and clinical teams have been looking for improved ways to support the health and safety of this population.

On May 7, 2026, the second annual HSC Harm Reduction Day will be held virtually, providing us with an opportunity to discuss this vital subject and hear from speakers with professional and lived experience with substance use and addiction recovery. Our theme for 2026 is Harm Reduction: Committing to Care.

Visit hsc.mb.ca/adults/harm-reduction/ to register for the event and view the agenda.

Every healthcare visit has an environmental footprint. Although you may not notice it right away, sustainability practices need to be into every aspect of healthcare, ranging from items bought and used within the facility, to the energy that powers it.

At Shared Health, the Environmental Sustainability and Energy team works behind the scenes to help advance initiatives that combine healthcare operations with sustainable practices, reducing environmental impact while supporting public health and operational resilience.

“Environmental sustainability in healthcare is crucial; it directly connects to the well-being of both the planet and the people who rely on it. A healthy planet – clean air, clean water, healthy soil – supports healthy lives,” shared Lea Cote, Environmental Sustainability Coordinator.

“By finding small, yet impactful changes, we’re helping create a more sustainable future for healthcare, one step at a time.”

From an energy performance perspective, the Women’s Hospital at HSC is a standout example of innovation and forward thinking; showcasing what is achievable when sustainability is prioritized from the beginning. It ranks among the highest-performing hospitals in North America in terms of energy efficiency and environmental impact.

“Every data point tells a story, and we’re using those stories to drive action, inform investments, and highlight leadership in the system,” explained Boonstra.

“Our vision is a healthcare system that leads by example. It’s about setting a direction, building capacity, and driving systemic change while delivering exceptional care and minimizing our environmental footprint – all while strengthening resilience in the face of climate change.”

Earth Day serves as a reminder to remain committed to environmental sustainability. While the Environmental Sustainability and Energy team engages in sustainable projects year-round, Earth Day provides an opportunity to emphasize the importance of these initiatives and celebrate the collective efforts across our province that contribute to a greener and more sustainable future.

When John Broadhurst relocated to Manitoba he finally found the answers he was seeking about health concerns that had long puzzled him. It was quickly determined he had been previously misdiagnosed, which had hidden his true need for support with autism.

“There is my life before my diagnosis and now my life after diagnosis. I feel like I lost my 20s, but I’m so happy with my life now in my 30s. I owe my entire life to the care and the providers in the system here in Manitoba,” he shared, expressing his gratitude for the support he received. “The providers here are just geniuses!”

That moment marked a significant turning point in Broadhurst’s life. With an accurate diagnosis and proper support, he was able to shift from a state of struggle to a life filled with promise, fulfillment, and deep appreciation.

“Thus, the volunteering!” he said with a smile. “I wanted to give back for the gift I received from the people in the system.”

Broadhurst began volunteering at HSC two years ago. What started as an act of gratitude quickly evolved into a passion. Today, he serves as a volunteer ambassador, guiding patients and visitors through the hospital’s complex campus.

“There’s just something about volunteering and helping people that feels so good. It’s payment in and of itself.”

This week is National Volunteer Week, an opportunity to recognize the important contributions of those who volunteer to help improve our health system by sharing their time, compassion, and their skills.

Measles is one of the most highly contagious diseases, characterized by a red, blotchy rash. The measles virus spreads through close personal contact with an infected person and through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The virus can be spread by droplets that can stay in the air for several hours. Infection can result in serious illness or death.

Immunization is the best way to prevent measles. Talk to your healthcare provider or call Health Links – Info Santé (1-888-315-9257) about how to ensure everyone is up to date. If you are planning to travel with an infant between 6 months and 12 months of age, talk to your healthcare provider about early measles vaccination.

Our Story

More than 8,000 staff, physicians and volunteers care for patients at HSC Winnipeg. Highly-skilled interdisciplinary teams provide complex, specialist (“tertiary”) acute care, including diagnostic, outpatient and inpatient services to adults and children across Manitoba, north-western Ontario and Nunavut.

HSC is a Shared Health facility, and is Manitoba’s provincial tertiary centre for trauma, transplants, burns, neurosciences, complex cancer care and pediatric care. Every clinical hospital-based service available in the province is offered at HSC, with the exception of cardiac surgery and eye surgery. This means the majority of Manitobans’ tertiary care is provided here, regardless of which community our patients call home.

HSC is also a teaching hospital, formally affiliated with the University of Manitoba and other post-secondary institutions. Students learn from us at the bedside or in the lab, and many of our staff teach and conduct research at these institutions.
