Manitoba has expanded its pediatric respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) immunoprophylaxis program to include all babies born in the province until March 31, 2026. This initiative marks a significant step forward in protecting Manitoba’s youngest patients.

In Manitoba, RSV accounts for 10 to 20 per cent of respiratory tract infections in infants requiring medical attention, with approximately five per cent of healthy infants hospitalized for RSV needing intensive care—rising to 10 per cent for those with underlying health conditions.

To combat this, the province is now offering Nirsevimab, a monoclonal antibody product, to all infants born between October 1, 2025, and March 31, 2026. Unlike a vaccine, it provides passive immunization—delivering the antibody directly to the infant, offering immediate protection that lasts the entire RSV season.

❄️ During the winter months, many of us reach for hot foods and drinks to stay warm. Please take extra care around children in the kitchen.

Hospitals across Canada, including the Children’s Hospital Emergency Department at HSC, tend to see more young patients with burn injuries from hot foods and drinks during the holiday season and into the winter months.

Hot soup, oils, boiling water, coffee, and tea can cause serious burns. Here are a few ways to help keep kids safe:
✔️ Create a kid-free zone around the stove (about 3 feet / three big steps away)
✔️ Put infants down while cooking instead of holding them
✔️ Use a high chair so your child can watch safely from a distance

If your child has a burn that blisters and is larger than a loonie, please take them to the nearest emergency room.

Visit https://ow.ly/K0qh50XMwTz to learn what symptoms to watch for, how to provide care at home, and when to visit your doctor, a clinic, or the Children’s Emergency Department.

Our Story

More than 8,000 staff, physicians and volunteers care for patients at HSC Winnipeg. Highly-skilled interdisciplinary teams provide complex, specialist (“tertiary”) acute care, including diagnostic, outpatient and inpatient services to adults and children across Manitoba, north-western Ontario and Nunavut.

HSC is a Shared Health facility, and is Manitoba’s provincial tertiary centre for trauma, transplants, burns, neurosciences, complex cancer care and pediatric care. Every clinical hospital-based service available in the province is offered at HSC, with the exception of cardiac surgery and eye surgery. This means the majority of Manitobans’ tertiary care is provided here, regardless of which community our patients call home.

HSC is also a teaching hospital, formally affiliated with the University of Manitoba and other post-secondary institutions. Students learn from us at the bedside or in the lab, and many of our staff teach and conduct research at these institutions.
