Since joining Health Sciences Centre in 2013, Kelly Merkeley-Paulsen (she/her), Nurse Practitioner with the HIV Program, has been a steadfast advocate and caregiver for individuals living with HIV across Manitoba.

Her role is multifaceted and deeply impactful — she follows clients during hospital admissions, supports treatment teams with HIV-specific care, and provides primary care to approximately 80 clients, along with walk-in services for episodic concerns.

Kelly describes the Nurse Practitioner role as a “beautiful blend of nursing and medicine,” offering both autonomy and the ability to complement multidisciplinary teams.

“NPs bring a unique perspective and skill set that helps fill gaps in care and improve patient outcomes.”

This Nurse Practitioner (NP) Week, we are celebrating the dedication, innovation, and compassionate care that NPs bring to HSC by sharing stories exemplifying the diverse roles nurse practitioners take across the facility.

It was a touchdown of good cheer at HSC Children’s Hospital yesterday as nearly 20 Canadian Football League Players Association (CFLPA) players showed up with the Grey Cup in tow. 🏈 The players visited with patients, families, and staff in advance of Sunday’s Grey Cup final in Winnipeg. Special thanks to the Children’s Hospital Foundation and HSC Children’s Child Life staff for helping kids and families create meaningful memories by sharing Grey Cup spirit while in hospital.

With respiratory viruses circulating, it’s important to know what symptoms to look for and when to seek help.

Where you go will depend on your child’s symptoms as well as where you are located. Many common cold and flu symptoms can be safely treated at home, or with a visit to your doctor, a walk-in clinic, or urgent care centre.

Having a sick or injured child can be scary and overwhelming. Knowing where to go BEFORE your child becomes sick or injured can help you make the right decision when they need care.

For those who are affected by sexual assault and/or intimate partner violence, it can be difficult to know where to turn. But specialized teams working across Manitoba want you to know that help and resources are available – in hospital and in the community.

Across Manitoba, emergency departments and urgent care centres are available to care for the physical and medical needs of people who have been harmed, including by intimate partner violence. HSC’s Sexual Assault and Intimate Partner Violence Program offers a private, safe, and compassionate environment for patients.

Please call 204-787-2071 and ask for the Sexual Assault/Intimate Partner Violence Examiner or report to Adult or Children’s Emergency.

November is Domestic Violence Awareness Month – an opportunity to promote awareness of the services and resources available to individuals in need of support – or medical attention – due to an experience involving intimate partner violence.

Kayleigh Gordon’s father tested his blood sugar out of pure curiosity, while socializing at a wedding. The simple test, performed on a friend’s monitor, identified that his blood sugars were too high, resulting in an appointment with his doctor and a formal diagnosis of type two diabetes.

“My dad really did not know he had diabetes. Similar to high blood pressure, it’s a medical condition you might not feel right away as the symptoms are not always specific. Symptoms of high blood sugar include feeling more thirsty than usual, hunger, abnormally tired and needing to urinate often," shared Kayleigh, a pharmacist in one of Health Sciences Centre’s hemodialysis units.

"Diabetes and its complications hit close to home. I bet if you reach out, especially in Manitoba, there is someone in your circle who is affected by this disease."

Today is World Diabetes Day and November is Diabetes Awareness Month. Read more about Kayleigh's story here: https://ow.ly/1fMV50U3xLL

Brooke began her nursing journey in 2015 as a Registered Nurse in pediatric acute care at Health Sciences Centre. In 2023, she transitioned into the NP role, joining the Manitoba Spine Clinic in March 2025.

“As the first NP in this position, I’ve found the experience both exciting and rewarding. The role is evolving, and there are many opportunities for NPs to be integrated in new ways,” she said.

“I work closely with a multidisciplinary team, including spine surgeons, clinical assistants, registered nurses, surgical office assistants, and nursing assistants and often serve as a liaison between spine surgeons and other healthcare providers to ensure coordinated and timely care.”

This Nurse Practitioner (NP) Week, we are celebrating the dedication, innovation, and compassionate care that NPs bring to HSC by sharing stories exemplifying the diverse roles nurse practitioners take across the facility.

Our Story

More than 8,000 staff, physicians and volunteers care for patients at HSC Winnipeg. Highly-skilled interdisciplinary teams provide complex, specialist (“tertiary”) acute care, including diagnostic, outpatient and inpatient services to adults and children across Manitoba, north-western Ontario and Nunavut.

HSC is a Shared Health facility, and is Manitoba’s provincial tertiary centre for trauma, transplants, burns, neurosciences, complex cancer care and pediatric care. Every clinical hospital-based service available in the province is offered at HSC, with the exception of cardiac surgery and eye surgery. This means the majority of Manitobans’ tertiary care is provided here, regardless of which community our patients call home.

HSC is also a teaching hospital, formally affiliated with the University of Manitoba and other post-secondary institutions. Students learn from us at the bedside or in the lab, and many of our staff teach and conduct research at these institutions.
