📣 April 2 is Autism Awareness Day! 📣

👇Learn About Project Search at HSC

Project SEARCH is a workforce alternative that partners with organizations to empower individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism through valuable work experience. Together, these opportunities allow students to grow skills and experience on-site training in professional settings with a goal of longer-term employment.

Health Sciences Centre is a proud partner of Project SEARCH and has been providing valuable on-site training and work experience since 2016.

Project SEARCH, in partnership with SCE LifeWorks, allows HSC Winnipeg to increase employment opportunities and continue to build meaningful relationships within the community. Creating a more inclusive environment through the program enables staff to better understand those with disabilities and helps patients and visitors see themselves in the type of care and services available at HSC Winnipeg.

Project SEARCH promotes accessibility and inclusion conversations within the workplace. When a student is placed within a department, their experience may highlight physical, ideological and systemic barriers that become opportunities to identify strategies that will support student success and improve access for others.

HSC is proud to be working with Project SEARCH to increase employment opportunities, promote inclusive work environments and reduce barriers to employment.

George Boulanger grew up in Berens River, Manitoba and became fluent in Ojibway at an early age, a gift he has carried with him throughout his life. As an Interpreter for nearly 19 years, he has been providing a comforting connection to home for Indigenous patients through language.

“What we do is very important. We’re like a bridge of communication,” said Boulanger, who has been a member of the Indigenous Health team at HSC for 17 years. “These language barriers prevent patients from fully understanding medical terminology and their diagnosis.”

As an Interpreter, Boulanger simplifies complex medical terms and relays them in Ojibway to ensure information is thoroughly understood between health care providers, patients and their families all while maintaining patient privacy and dignity.

“Patients coming from First Nations communities are often faced with a language barrier and that is where we come in,” Boulanger explains.

Jason Swan is from Lake Manitoba First Nation and has worked in the health system in a variety of roles for nearly 18 years. Swan speaks fluent Ojibway and is currently a Discharge Planning Coordinator, an important member of the health-care team that helps ensure patients from First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities have a care plan before they leave HSC.

Swan added the Indigenous Health team at HSC works hard to create a comfortable environment, and an important part of that is being able to provide Interpreter services in a variety of Indigenous languages.

“I always get asked if I speak the language, and as soon as I tell them I do, they light up,” Swan said with a smile. “When they know you’re from a First Nations community and speak their tongue it helps break down their walls a little bit.”

Manitoba’s health system recognizes National Indigenous Languages Day on March 31 as an opportunity to honour the rich linguistic heritage of First Nations, Inuit and Métis across the province.

Interpretation services are available for several Indigenous languages at HSC, including Cree, Ojibway/ Saulteaux, and Anisininew/Island Lake and Inuit languages.

March is Music Therapy Month and Shared Health would like to recognize the exceptional work of our music therapy professionals and the meaningful and healing interactions they provide for patients.

Exposure to music can be a powerful tool for patients receiving care in hospital, offering comfort and distraction and, in the case of the youngest patients, promoting development. At HSC, music therapists have been providing and supporting psychosocial care for more than two decades.

Music therapists require a degree in order to provide services in the hospital setting. The training includes specific courses in music and music therapy, as well as psychology and biology. Music is capable of evoking strong memories and emotions and the education and certification ensure therapists are equipped to provide a safe space for patients coping with the wide range of emotions that may emerge during exposure to music.

While the primary intent of music therapy is to offer support and benefit to patients and their families, the power of music therapy also extends to staff, spawning moments of connection outside of the routine of hospital care.

Our Story

More than 8,000 staff, physicians and volunteers care for patients at HSC Winnipeg. Highly-skilled interdisciplinary teams provide complex, specialist (“tertiary”) acute care, including diagnostic, outpatient and inpatient services to adults and children across Manitoba, north-western Ontario and Nunavut.

HSC is a Shared Health facility, and is Manitoba’s provincial tertiary centre for trauma, transplants, burns, neurosciences, complex cancer care and pediatric care. Every clinical hospital-based service available in the province is offered at HSC, with the exception of cardiac surgery and eye surgery. This means the majority of Manitobans’ tertiary care is provided here, regardless of which community our patients call home.

HSC is also a teaching hospital, formally affiliated with the University of Manitoba and other post-secondary institutions. Students learn from us at the bedside or in the lab, and many of our staff teach and conduct research at these institutions.
