Mullein popped up on my property and I couldn't be more excited! 🤩

This beautiful plant pops up every other year (I didn't see it last year when I moved in) and I'm so thrilled to see it this year! The leaves are incredible to touch too.. super furry! 🄰

Its main uses are for:

🌱
🌱
🌱congestion
🌱coughs
🌱
🌱mucus
🌱antacid

Not sure if I'll use my beautiful plant for anything this year but it's still so exciting to me how amazing God is and how he literally created all these beautiful plants to heal us.. like.. even in the midst of the doom and gloom.. how blessed are we really? šŸ™šŸ’«šŸ’•

Watermelon picking at the grocery store is like a science (or maybe an art šŸ™ƒ) and I find people's techniques so fascinating..

You have people who pick them up and look for the heaviest one, you have some people who tap or knock on them, you have others that smell them.. and then you have people like me, who look for the one with the yellow/orange creamy spot.. I like that full flavour !! 🤠

And of course I had to throw in some quick nutritional info in here! Not only is watermelon up to 90% water, it is:

šŸ’› full of minerals like potassium, calcium and even iron!
šŸ’› contains beta carotene/lycopene which converts to vitamin A in the body - vitamin A is an antioxidant especially good for the eyes
šŸ’› contains vitamin C which I think by now we all know how important vitamin C is for.. everything!! , , offsetting EMFs, ... gotta get that C in!!

I'd love to know.. how do you pick your watermelon? 😜

Everything in this world is energy and energy vibrates at varying frequencies.

This is not "woo-woo" stuff.. this is actual science - quantum physics to be precise.

When it comes to healing the body, we often focus on nutrition, exercise, detoxification, pills and potions etc. but we neglect to address our emotions.

Emotions are energy as well and so, each emotion has a certain frequency or vibration.

Sometimes, when we go through a traumatic experience, the energy of the emotion that was elicited in that experience can become stuck in the body and the body can continue to vibrate at that frequency.

These stuck emotions can occur at any age and they can manifest as dis-ease within the body. They can cause inflammation, depression, skin issues, digestive issues and even chronic illness.

We need to change the frequency of the body by feeling creative, elevated emotions like joy, gratitude and love. These emotions vibrate at a higher frequency than negative emotions like resentment, sadness, stress and can literally change the chemistry of the body. Elevated emotions can literally heal you.

Changing the chemistry of the body can be done through different methods, but Dr. Joe Dispenza has worked with thousands of people to effectively accomplish this through breathwork. Thousands of testimonies to his work indicate that there is really something to this. By coming back to the breath, we can ā€œpull the mind out of the bodyā€.

Actually, recently I have been under a lot of stress and it’s really crazy how my body has become inflamed and I’m having a hard time digesting anything (and I eat so well, I exercise, I supplement etc.). But incorporating breathwork and feeling gratitude has reduced my inflammation significantly and helped me digest. Still lots of work to do from an emotional perspective, but I'm on my way!

All this to say, that emotions are an integral part to healing and they should not be neglected. Practice breathwork, gratitude, do things that bring you joy and find it in your heart to love unconditionally.

Sending you all lots of unconditional love,
Shannon šŸ’•

I used to be really restrictive with my diet.

I cut out all sugar, dairy, gluten, fried foods, starches/grains and even all nightshades at one point. I have jumped on almost every diet bandwagon from ā€œno grain, no painā€ to autoimmune protocols.

I became obsessed with it – not ever veering away from this way to eat for fear that I could cause dis-ease within my body. This also made it difficult for others to dine out with me because they were like ā€œwell, you’re so picky, so you choose where we can go to eatā€. While my loved ones didn’t mean any harm, that sentence in and of itself brought some guilt and shame with it.

My extreme restriction actually didn’t come from my own digestive issues. It stemmed from my mom’s diagnosis with breast cancer. As we researched natural ways to heal, I really became scared that the food that I would consume would directly affect my health.

And while proper nutrition is absolutely 100% important and an extremely crucial piece of the puzzle, it really isn’t the be all and end all.

As I’m navigating my own healing journey and witnessing that of others, I’m realizing how important emotions are in health.

If you’re not on a strict protocol that requires you to remove your favourite foods temporarily or dealing with severe allergies, it’s ok to indulge. If eating that piece of cake is going to make you feel really good then I think it’s important to eat that piece of cake. Perhaps you will decide to indulge in a ā€œhealthierā€ version of the thing that you want but the lesson here is that it’s ok to do things that make you feel good and in fact, it is welcomed. Your emotions are equally important.

Lots of love and healing to all of you,

When I started to approach my mid-thirties, I really started to think about having children. I wanted to ensure (as best I could) that my future kids wouldn't have to go through the things that I went through - digestive issues, acne and anxiety and depression.

My diet was already cleaned up and I wasn't using anything toxic except, my face routine - it was still full of harsh toxic chemicals. It became even more important to me to give that up because I knew the health of your baby can be impacted by the health of your womb. And I also knew, sometimes it can take time to rid the body of those chemicals way after you stop using them. 😣

Being a conscious parent starts with yourself. It means doing what you need to do to be the best version of you. It also means setting a positive example for those that look up to you and rely on you.🄰

When you take your health into your own hands, you are showing others, especially your little ones, that you are capable, worthy and deserving of a happy and healthy life. In turn, they will know that they are capable, worthy and deserving too. It creates a ripple effect, and it’s a beautiful thing.

If this resonates with you, send me a message and let's start a ripple effect in your own family. šŸ’•

Some really nice options here, am I right? 🤩

Right now, I’m pretty obsessed with bone broth. I’m not sure if it’s because it’s so cold out, the taste, the way it makes my tummy feel or all of the above. I just feel it is so healing overall. It actually does help heal the intestinal lining as it is high in glutamine. Glutamine is an amino acid that is anti-inflammatory, rebuilds the gut lining and also, helps with a balanced microbiome.

Coconut oil is an antimicrobial and contains some beautiful fats like medium chain triglycerides (MCTs). Anti-microbials can help rebalance gut bacteria as they make for unfavourable conditions for the ā€œbadā€ bacteria while leaving good bacteria in tact.

Extra virgin olive oil has omega 3s that help balance out inflammation.

Fermented veg are probably the most underrated gut health food in my opinion. It is so inexpensive to make (and easy too) and it provides a nice variety of gut bacteria. Unless you have major gut issues that require a strong probiotic, fermented veg is the way to go to.

Sprouted grains and legumes (and even nuts and seeds) unlock nutrients within food so they are more readily available but also are easier to digest.

Ginger and oregano are both anti-microbials and anti-inflammatory.

Cabbage can be harsh for some to digest in its raw form but if you lightly sautƩ or steam, it will be easier to digest and very healing as it contains glutamine. You could also make a cabbage juice and drink that. A word of warning, cabbage juiced can be a bit spicy (at least I find it to be). I chose to highlight red cabbage specifically because it contains the most antioxidants which are also healing for the gut.

And then there’s inulin rich foods like Jerusalem artichoke. Inulin is a prebiotic meaning, it helps feed gut bacteria – gotta keep those babies happy and healthy!

Wishing you all a happy belly!šŸ’•šŸ¤

Ever had butterflies in your stomach when you’re around someone you’re attracted to? How about a gut feeling about something?

Well, it’s now widely accepted by the scientific community that there is in fact a bi-directional influence between the gut and the brain, meaning, the health of one can impact the health of the other and vice versa.

There’s a few ways how this works, but let’s look at two:

1ļøāƒ£ Through the vagus nerve. The vagus nerve is referred to as the ā€œwandering nerveā€ as it is the longest nerve in the body. It has a huge influence on our ā€œrest and digestā€ nervous system. It connects your brain, digestive system, liver, pancreas (and other organs). This allows for physical communication between the gut and the brain since it is a physical pathway. This is why, if you’re like me, when you are feeling stressed, you cannot even think of food cause you simply can’t digest it properly.

2ļøāƒ£ Through microbes. The gut microbiome includes bacteria, fungi, protozoa and other microbes. The key is to have a balanced microbial ecosystem – so you want a diversity of microbes, not too much of one. It’s the same as in nature – you don’t want too many of one animal or plant as it affects the whole ecosystem’s processes. A balanced ā€œgut ecosystemā€ helps us digest food and absorb nutrients, but it also helps us produce neurotransmitters like serotonin (happy chemical), dopamine (rewarding chemical) and GABA (anti-anxiety chemical) which can pass via blood circulation.

This is why it is so important to address gut health if you want to address brain health. DM to learn more!

Wishing you all a happy and healthy gut-brain connection! šŸ’•

I feel we are at a place where people are genuinely ready to educate themselves about all available remedies, in order to make sound decisions and take charge of their health. And so, this is my mission: to bring awareness. šŸ™šŸ’•

This post is not to be taken as medical advice or to persuade you not to use conventional treatments. I also very much encourage you to speak to your GP and/or a therapist about your anxiety because they are equipped to help direct you with techniques and remedies as well.

Let’s get into some of these natural remedies:

Deep breathing is such a wonderful way to become present. When you focus on taking in deep diaphragmatic breaths, you actually stimulate your vagus nerve which is connected all the way from your brain down to your gut. Stimulating your vagus nerve helps relax the body and thus, has an anti-anxiety effect.

An anti-inflammatory diet will be rich in whole foods and nutrients like magnesium, omega 3 and B vitamins (which are all anti-anxiety nutrients). As much as you may not want to hear it, limiting refined sugar, alcohol and caffeine will help improve anxiety as increases in these, will very likely increase anxiety.

Lack of sleep can amplify anxiety by stimulating regions of the brain associated with emotional processing. You simply don't think straight when you don't get adequate rest.

Stimulating olfactory receptors with essential oils like rose and ylang ylang can have a calming effect. Rose has energetic ties to the heart and can help with panic attacks and grieving. Ylang ylang soothes fearfulness and brings in optimism.

Movement is so important when it comes to emotions – after all, emotions are energy in motion. We can trap emotions in the body after experiencing trauma. Moving allows the opportunity to move that energy.

Magnesium provides a calming effect on the body. It has an inverse relationship with stress and anxiety. More stress/anxiety = depletion of magnesium.

In a clinical study, neem as an extract actually matched diazepam (an anti-anxiety med) in terms of effectiveness. Kava kava was also found to effectively treat anxiety.

Wishing you all anxiety-less days and lots of love šŸ’•

Yes, I am specifically saying pasture raised eggs..

If you don’t know why, here’s a few reasons!

Factory farmed eggs are laid by chickens that are in very close, often unsanitary, quarters. They are mostly fed vegetarian feed (GMO grains like corn). The issue with this, beyond the fact that it is GMO feed, is that chickens are carnivores and are meant to eat bugs!

Another issue is that the environment in which animals are meant to live to be happy and healthy should be as close to nature as possible – not caged, not restricted, not squished with other animals.

Hens need access to sunlight, fresh air and earth! An unnatural environment will likely increase stress hormones like cortisol, and guess what happens when you eat that? You likely absorb that as well. I don’t think anyone needs more stress hormones in their body… am I right?

But why does this all matter? Because the food that you consume literally builds your body, your tissues, your cells. You want to get the most bang (nutrition) for your buck.

All animals that are raised on their ā€œancestral dietā€ and in their natural environments, including humans, will thrive. And when you eat an animal that is raised on their ancestral diet and in their natural environment (as much as possible, given seasons), you will get the most bang for your buck as the nutrition content will be at its peak. It’s just how we were divinely designed to live.

Get to know your local farmers and/or visit your farmer’s market and ask the right questions. You can also have your own chicken coop in your backyard (depending on where you live!).

It’s crucial to get to know your food so you can make nutritious decisions for your body to thrive.

Lots of love and thriving health to you šŸ’•

Do you know how your body communicates with you?

It sends you messages through signs and symptoms.

Signs are the physical issues we see, for example bloating, while symptoms are the things that we feel but cannot see like a headache.

Both are messages and they need to be heard and responded to!

Because when we ignore the bodies messages, they normally don’t just go away on their own, they tend to only get louder.

Answer your body and take action.

If you’re not sure what your body is saying to you, let’s have a candid talk, just me and you. Send me a message and let’s empower you. 🤠

In the mean time, if you’re bloated, swipe to start asking yourself if these could be some of the reasons.šŸ¤”

This isn't just a post to say how much I miss squinting in the hot sun! 😜

I want to remind you that if you live in Canada, you gotta be supplementing vitamin D3 right now! I prefer a capsule or liquid form, over the tablet form because I've read so many times that tablets in general don't break down as easily in the body.

Vitamin D is actually considered an antioxidant but it is especially important for the immune system, nervous system and bone health.

Now the question is, do we need to supplement D3 with K2? Well, if you don't eat enough egg yolks, fish, beef liver, natto (fermented soy), grass fed dairy/cheeses maybe. We can convert some K1 (which is pretty abundant in your diet if you eat leafy greens) to K2 in the gut, if our gut microflora allow for it.. which very much depends on the individual.

K2 with D3 allows for calcium to be shuttled into the bones.. so it's especially important if you're trying to accomplish that. If you decide to take D3 with K2, I personally wouldn't exceed the recommended dose on the bottle.

While you can supplement D3 in high amounts fairly safely (upper limit according to Health Canada for ages 9+ is 4000 IU), I wouldn't do the same with vitamin K. Always check your blood levels if you're not sure. Supplements are generally regarded as safe but bio individuality always needs to be considered.

Check out my story today for some links on D3 🤠

My kitchen is finally coming together so I thought I would give you a peak! šŸ’•

I spent most of my summer organizing and doing renos on my farmhouse. It was alot of work - some blood, lots of sweat and definitely tears!

But it's all coming together slowly but surely..
And my green, gold and woodsy kitchen is becoming my favourite place again! Yayyy!

Still gotta do the backsplash though... any volunteers? 😜
