Let’s talk back pain!

Back pain is one of the more common issues that we see in performance horses for a variety of reasons.

Some common symptoms we may see include;
* Pinning ears
* Bucking
* Lack of impulsion
* Stiffness going one direction versus another
* Shortened stride length
* Atrophy

A major muscle that is involved in the anatomy of the horses back is the multifidus muscle. The multifidus muscle plays a critical role in core stability as well as stabilizes and aligns the vertebrae so that propulsive forces from the hindquarters can be transmitted forward.

One of my favourite stretches to leave as home care for clients is our carrot stretches. Studies show that by doing the carrot stretches 3x/week for 6 weeks there was improved size, strength, and function of the multifidus muscle.

Photo 1 Demonstrates the nose to chest carrot stretch targeting the poll to mid-neck.

Photo 2 Demonstrates the nose to knees carrot stretch targeting the poll to behind the withers.

Photo 3 Demonstrates the nose to fetlock stretch which targets the poll all the way to the SI joint.

Photo 4 Demonstrates a lateral carrot stretch which you want to keep to the level of the flank or lower. If the carrot is held higher the horses will hollow their back instead of the rounding motion we are looking for.

Add these stretches into your routine today and notice the positive changes in your horse!

The light was coming through just perfectly today to capture a special moment in the shadows during ZuZu’s massage. It’s these quiet, intimate moments that really make me appreciate how special my job is and what amazing clients I have- human, equine and canine. 💜❤️

A before and after for today! Initially very tucked up and tight in his lumbar area and sore around his SI as well as some visible facial restrictions. In the after you can see a much more smooth topline once the muscles were released and restrictions broken up.

Ditto showing all the feels during his massage. Lots of releases and licking and chewing throughout his treatment.

What is a trigger point??
*
A trigger point is a hyper irritable focus within a taut band of skeletal muscle and/or its associated fascia.
*
It is usually painful or tender upon compression and can evoke a characteristic twitch response, referred pain pattern and/or autonomic phenomena.
*
This clients horse is on a monthly preventative schedule. Since last month she has developed this active trigger point and because I see her regularly we are able to catch it early and prevent it from becoming a bigger issue!
*
Regular massage treatments are part of a well rounded preventative/maintenance program for any horse. Contact me if you have any questions!
