Here's a Katrina pile update showing how I track my compost recipe and temperature/moisture/turning requirements to make the best compost for safety and beneficial microbiology.

The 3 key principles are
- moisture
- oxygen
And
- Biodiversity

Compost Tea...

Compost tea is an aerobic liquid biological amendment. It is made from biological compost that is steeped in water and bubbled for about 24 hours. Microbial foods are added to promote microbial reproduction. Bacteria reproduce every 20min, so the resulting liquid is bacterial dominant but still contains a complete soil food web.

Compost teas are also slightly sticky (from the biofilm produced by bacteria), and are perfect as a foliar feed on orchard trees. Since many fruit trees are prone to bacterial/fungal/viral infections, coating a bud, leaf, fruit or even stem wounds with the beneficial bacteria found in compost tea will not only give the leaves and tree a nutrient boost; it will make a barrier of beneficial microbes to prevent colonization by potential pathogens.

Bud break (spring) is the perfect time for a first application of compost tea.

Thank you for coming to our Rewild Open House / Earth 🌎 Day Celebration! We were blessed with beautiful weather. The compost tea turned out great and everyone went hope with a sample. We also sold several bags of inoculum, along with extract bags, so everyone can treat their properties at their leisure.

People came from downtown Toronto to across the road! Thank you to our earth loving community 💕

For the first time ever I am sifting compost! On Earth Day I am launching my first ever bagged inoculum -- super small scall -- for use in compost teas a nd extracts.

This inoculum is unlike any other I have ever seen on the market...
- composed of 3 unique biodiverse composts: vermicompost ("worm"), Johnson-Su ("cold"), and thermal aerobic ("hot").
- all made on site
- coarsely sifted to retain woodchips and aggregates for fungi and air
- around 35% moisture
- clear packaging with microfilter for breathing but no contamination
- minimal to no plastics (getting better at this)
- every batch is microscope tested to verify a complete and biologically active soil food web, reports provided
- NEXT UP: 3rd party pathogens testing and official labels.

This is my REWILD BLEND. Working on composition by based on availability right now it is 20% vermicompost, 20% Johnson-Su, and 60% thermal aerobic.

A microbial world is born!

The first pile of 2026 is named not after the hurricane, but after a strong and influential woman. One of my greatest mentors, Katrina Van Osch-Saxon . Homesteader, teacher, arborist, entrepreneur, wild child, feminine power, grass roots, giver, creator, and all things divine.

Just over one week until our Rewild Open House!

With the settling in or Spring (the Phoebe and frogs have returned! Crocus are blooming, compost is defrosting), I have switched gears to dirty jeans, muddy boots, and scratched hands.

Ive been checking on the composts (covering or airing out), pruning and burning raspberry canes, priming the back island for a few more apple trees, and tending to chicks, chickens, worms, and fish!

In preparation for the Open House I'm getting feedstock ready for a thermal 1 yard tower. The hoses arent hooked up yet but we've got rain in the forecast!

I'm excited to share with people some of these projects and more.
