Flavonoid’s Make You Smart!

Flavonoids are powerfully antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, which, it turns out, is great for your brain.

This new study included 961 people between the ages of 60 and 100. It followed them for nearly 7 years. Impressively, it found that the people who got the most flavonoids in their diet had slower rate of cognitive decline and improved cognition in multiple ways.
Specifically, flavonoids significantly slowed decline in global cognition, episodic memory, semantic memory, perceptual speed and working memory. That means flavonoids help keep your mind and memory young.

The best flavonoids seemed to be kaempferol and quercetin. And the best way to eat them seemed to be kale, beans, tea, spinach, broccoli and apples. You can also get flavonoids as supplements.

Depressed & Anxious? Inhale Your Herbal Tea Before Drinking

There are few things in nature more beautiful and calming than a purple field of lavender flowers. When you make a tea out of those flowers, they may beautifully calm your anxiety and brighten your depression.

Several studies have shown that lavender calms anxiety and depression. This gentle flower is so powerful that it works as well as the harsh drugs. Lavender oil is as good as or better than benzodiazepines (Phytomed 2010;17(2):94-9) and SSRIs (Int J Neuropsychopharmacol 2014;17(6):859-869) for anxiety, and lavender tincture is a match for imipramine for depression (Prog Neuropsychopharmacol Biol Psychiatry 2003). This new study looked at lavender tea, but it added a wrinkle. The people in the study were told to inhale the lavender aroma before drinking it: aromatherapy and a soothing cup of tea all at once. The study was single-blind and included 60 people who were sixty or older and who were experiencing mild to moderate depression. Half of them went untreated and half of them drank a cup of tea in the morning and a cup of tea in the evening for two weeks. Each cup of tea was made from a 2g tea bag steeped for 10-15 minutes. The control group did not improve, but the lavender group did. They had significant improvement in both depression and anxiety, and those improvements were significant when compared to the non-tea drinkers. The lavender tea was as safe as it was effective: there were no adverse events. This study offers hope of a safe, effective, pleasant and inexpensive way of helping elderly people with depression and anxiety. Complement Ther Med. May 2020;50:102393

Pandemic of the Vitamin D Deficient

A systematic review and meta-analysis of 14 studies has shown that people with a vitamin D deficiency are 80% more likely to get COVID. It also found that vitamin D reduces the risk of transmission, severe illness, hospitalization, admission to ICU and death (Front Public Health. 2021;9: 24559).

Rejuvenate Your Brain with Ginkgo!

42% of seniors are affected by mild cognitive impairment, a decline in cognition that affects memory, thinking, judgement and language but is not extreme enough to cause the problems of Alzheimer’s. There is no drug that helps.

People with a type of MCI called amnestic MCI are at increased risk of Alzheimer’s. But when 500 people were given 120mg of Ginkgo biloba extract a day for 2 years, they had significant improvement on the Mini-Mental State Exam. Ginkgo improved their memory and their ability to perform activities of daily life.

This is at least the second study to show ginkgo helps amnestic MCI (Int J Geriatr Psychiatry 2014;29:1087- 95).

The Dietary Change that Could Save Your Brain

What if what you eat now could help prevent you from developing dementia later? You’d do it, right? Do what? This new study will tell you.

Recently, a new idea has emerged that suggests that there is an interaction between your brain and your gut. One of the ways that interaction may be important to you is that the bacteria in your gut, the gut microbiome, may help prevent dementia by influencing brain plasticity and cognitive function. And one important way to influence your gut microbiome is fiber. That raises the question of whether a diet higher in fiber can help prevent dementia. To test that theory, researchers analyzed the diets of 3,739 people and then followed them for an average of 19.7 years to see if there was an association between eating fiber and risk of dementia requiring care. They found that people who ate more fiber did have a lower risk of dementia requiring care. The ones who got the most fiber in their diet were 26% less likely to develop dementia. The benefit was greater for soluble fiber than for insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber is found abundantly in fruits, vegetables, legumes and oats. Nutritional Neuroscience. The Business…

In June of 1999 Ken was hired as the store manager at Great Earth Vitamins located in the New Sudbury Centre mall. In November 2003 Ken purchased this business and relocated to a larger space within the mall. With renovations completed the store reopened with a ten year lease as ‘The New Sudbury Nutrition Centre”. The business grew substantially during these years acquiring a loyal customer base that appreciated getting sensible answers to their questions. Much outreach took place during this time in the form of public presentations held in a variety of community spaces on many topics pertaining to health, wellness, and nutrition.

In November of 2013 (end of the mall lease), ‘The New Sudbury Nutrition Centre” relocated down the street into the lower level of the Lasalle Family Chiropractic Clinic. Unfortunately this location was short lived and closed in May of 2015
due primarily to the lack of easy access and customer parking.

All energy was now focused on the anchor store -
“ The Valley Nutrition Centre”; a full service health food store that was opened six years earlier in June of 2009 to better serve the area north of the city. With an emphasis on great customer service and a “Points” program in place, once again a loyal customer base was developed that expected sensible answers to their questions and appropriate nutritional recommendations.

New customers frequently walk in because of referrals from friends, family,
or health care practitioners. And more recently in response to COVID19,
aside from the extra cleaning, acrylic barriers, safeguards and procedures; changes were made to the store hours to facilitate customer deliveries after
hours. And of course there is much interest at this time for effective products
for cold and flu prevention and other suggestions for optimal immune support.
