In persistent pain, the brain’s map of your body can change.
Not metaphorically.
Literally.
Research on tactile discrimination shows that in painful conditions, the representation of a body part in the brain can become altered
When the map gets fuzzy:
• movement can feel awkward or clumsy
• the area feels “not quite right,” off, or different
• coordination diminishes
• pain often increases
This is why we sometimes train:
• touch awareness
• left/right recognition
• slow controlled movement
• with graded exposure
We’re not just strengthening tissue.
We’re refining the brain’s map.
👇 Try this:
Close your eyes and lightly trace your painful area with your finger.
Does it feel clear and precise? Or vague and hard
to localize/ picture where it is? Is it the same as the other side?
That tells us something important.
