Dr. Markus Roggen, the president and chief science officer of psychedelics and cannabis research and development firm Delic Labs, said he supports the intent of the San Francisco psychedelics proposal.

“I welcome decriminalization from a philosophical point, as criminalizing ‘drug’ possession/use has brought many costs and pains to the country,” Roggen wrote in an email to High Times.

But he added that he does not believe decriminalization goes far enough and that past harms caused by the criminalization of psychedelic drugs need to be righted. He also said that decriminalization should include regulation, noting the thriving illicit psychedelics industry in the Netherlands.

“There the use is legal but production illegal,” said Roggen. “The government handed this whole industry to the cartels and mafia.”

Concentrates & Extracts:

Clear vs. Pure: How Fallacies and Ignorance of Extraction Misrepresent the Cannabis Flower.

In this Op-Ed, Dr. Markus Roggen busts some myths about the ‘Clear’ craze.

Demand for cannabis extracts, in particular va**ng products, is at an all-time high. People want good oil, and they want to know something about the quality of it. It is therefore time to take a step back and consider the process from plant to cartridge. What is the current industry standard for cannabis extraction, what constitutes quality and where might we need to make some adjustments?

Right now, “clear” oil is hot. Customers have been led to believe that a pale gold extract is synonymous with the best possible cannabis concentrate, which is not necessarily the case. Producing a 95% pure THC extract with a translucent appearance is neither a great scientific feat nor a good representation of the whole cannabis flower. Moreover, it runs counter to the current trend of all-natural, non-processed foods and wellness products.

Cannabis is a fascinating plant. It is the basis of our livelihood, but more importantly, it enhances the quality of life for patients. The cannabis plant offers a plethora of medicinally interesting compounds. THC, CBD and terpenes are the most popular, but there are so many more. As of the most recent count, there are 146 known cannabinoids1. Cannabinoids are a group of structurally similar molecules2, including THC and CBD, many of which have shown biological activity3.

Then there are terpenes. These are the smaller molecules that give cannabis its distinct smell and flavor, over 200 of which have been identified in cannabis4. But wait, there’s more. The cannabis plant also produces countless other metabolites: flavonoids, alkaloids, phenols and amides5. All these components mixed together give the often-cited entourage effect.

From the Archives of Dr. Markus Roggen:

To keep growing, the cannabis industry must embrace the Dark Side: Big Pharma.

The Big Pharma empire has certainly given us many reasons to be skeptical, starting with Big Pharma’s stakes against cannabis legalization [1], its financial interest in addictive substances like opioids [2], artificial price inflation of life- saving drugs [3], and using patents to prevent innovation. [4] But the pharmaceutical industry is also known for: developing drugs that drastically reduced the prevalence of certain diseases, [5] product purity, [6] extensive clinical trials, [7] and their relatively low recall rates. [8]

Big Pharma has been perfecting its mastery of the Force for at least a century, and as a New Republic, turning away from this wealth of insight and experience would make the budding cannabis industry as bad as Jar Jar Binks. [9] If we don’t learn from the Dark Side, we will be extinguished.
So what does the pharmaceutical industry get right?

To keep growing, the cannabis industry must embrace the pharmaceutical industry in order to learn product safety, dosage consistencies, and more.

"If you spend top dollar on a top shelf flower bud, you have a right to know how long it will stay dank", Dr. Markus Roggen argues.

Testing procedures, the effects of cannabinoids and terpenes on the body, and regulations surrounding the industry are always being talked about, but nobody seems to talk about "Best Before" dates and product stability.

Cannabis products are improving in both quality and sophistication every day. Even standardization of active ingredients and medicinal effectiveness is progressing. Our industry is coming out of the shadows and into the limelight and is poised to be an economic driving force in the coming years. Can...
