A two-week update this time! I missed last week’s posting window—so here’s a double-header recap before I miss thisone too. There’s still a “Have-A-Go” wheelchair basketball session in Prince Rupert today (2–4pm), then it’s load the trailer and dash 7.5 hours back to Prince George to be bright-eyed for Quesnel school sessions first thing Monday. So… let’s get this posted while the moment is still here.
I often say spring is our busiest season as winter sports enter the “business end” and schools are eager to book. That may still prove true—but right now things are already running at full tilt. Aside from Remembrance Day, the past two weeks have been back-to-back with all our core programs plus a full slate of school sessions.
Week 1 had me based out of Prince George with regular commutes to Quesnel. That meant I could actually be home for evening wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby, and para badminton—always a treat. The three hours of daily driving? Less of a treat… but very much part of northern BC life.
A highlight this month has been seeing the highest uptake in NASA annual memberships since 2018. It’s wonderful reconnecting with so many familiar faces and welcoming new ones. And of course, this time of year always brings a little extra joy: the arrival of new NASA shirts and swag. Handing them out is honestly one of the best parts of the job. (And yes, thoughts are already turning to next year’s designs—especially the annual tour shirt.)
Week 2 took me westward, including a visit to a brand-new school. That’s becoming rarer these days as most of our sessions are return visits—an excellent sign that our messages are sticking and that we’re building long-term relationships. But wow, was it refreshing to walk into a completely new gym full of enthusiasm. Hearing all the kind comments—and the collective disappointment that we weren’t staying all week—was a real boost. (Less fun that they were disappointed… but you get what I mean!)
One perk of being on the road is the chance to catch up on the “extra” work in the evenings. This past week has been all about clearing email backlogs, checking off must-dos, and preparing presentations for our week in Dawson Creek for the upcoming Para Cup. For anyone still waiting on responses or co-developed materials: I promise you’re not forgotten. I’m chipping away whenever I can. If only the self-driving future would hurry up—imagine what I could accomplish on those long highway stretches! For now, though, it’s mostly audiobooks and scenery.
🙌 Shout-Out of the WeekA heartfelt thank-you to the Kindred Foundation. Their support this year has been deeply impactful as we work to help youth across Northern BC—of all backgrounds and abilities—connect, build confidence, and find community through sport. With funding opportunities shrinking and needs growing, we are especially grateful for their partnership.
