National Grief and Bereavement Day (November 18) serves as a reminder that grief isn’t just about death. For caregivers, it may also include small, painful losses that may occur while caring for someone.
Our family councils in long-term care provide a forum for all family caregivers who experience this loss with each and every visit.
Our families come to council meetings with anger, sadness, confusion, and even numbness. Family councils help validate, normalize, and process these emotions simply by sharing and finding out you are not alone.
Family Councils are not trained therapists, but they help to institute a mindfulness that helps us ground our conversations with the care team in a polite and empathetic way. If we are able to deepen relationships, we are able to have conversations that influence change and improve residents' quality of life.
Ask to get in touch with the family council in your long-term care home.
