After a brief hiatus from in person naturopathic care, I am thrilled to announce that I am joining the team at Advanced Women’s Health in Vancouver! AWH has clinics in two provinces and is like no other clinic I’ve seen. There is so much support and community for practitioners and patients alike, there is a reason they are growing so fast! Come take a look for yourself 😊.

Cottage cheese is a wonderful, clean source of protein and probiotics, if you tolerate dairy (and the texture 😆).

Some people though, find that they react to cottage cheese and assume it’s the dairy that’s bothering them. However, it might not be the dairy, but the additives that you’re reacting to. The different types of cottage cheese have very different ingredients.

To make dry cottage cheese, milk is lightly fermented, resulting in fresh cheese that’s cut into curds, drained, and rinsed. To make wet cottage cheese, those dry curds are then tossed with a “cream dressing.” This often contains multiple additives, which some people can’t tolerate.

Like all dairy, though, enjoy responsibly 😄

The benefits of resistance training are vast.

It is so so important to put some strain on our muscles and bones regularly to improve so many aspects of our health. Aim for 2-3 times a week, focusing on all major muscle groups. If you’re just starting out or healing from an injury, body weight exercises are enough. Don’t have access to a gym, no problem! There are so many home workouts out there to help you. Wherever you are, that’s a good place to start.

It felt SO good to be back in person with the naturopathic medical community after being apart for so long. It has been a good reminder of what we are doing and why. I am so thankful to be part of this incredible group of people, doing some pretty amazing things.

Time to stand, get a drink of water, water a plant, use the washroom, stretch, talk to a coworker. Don’t just ignore these small prompts, they are there to help. Our body was built to move, so let’s move. 💃🏻

It’s 3 PM, you’re feeling drowsy and peckish and you need something to perk you up til quitting time.

Instead of the muffin, try going for a 5 minute walk and having a drink of water. It might be all you need to keep you going strong (and without the crash after).

Has this happened to you?
You visit the doctor because you are feeling unwell, but when your labs come back they are all “normal”?

This can happen for a number of reasons:

1. Some tests were missed. For example: TSH without thyroid hormones is only part of the story, HbA1c or fasting glucose without insulin only tells us how your blood sugar is doing and not how hard your body is working to keep it in balance. Just because the things that were tested appear “normal” doesn’t mean that nothing is wrong. It’s important to keep digging.
2. The reference range is too big. Labs use a very broad reference range. People often feel best when their numbers are close to the middle. The test will not be flagged if your numbers are in range and most doctors will not check.

It’s pretty “normal” right now to feel overwhelmed, exhausted, and depressed, with acne, painful periods, hair loss, and weight gain. Just because something is normal, does not make it healthy. Maybe let’s not be satisfied with “normal” and shoot for optimal. I’m here to tell you, it’s possible.

Feeling stumped? Try going for a walk. Can’t find inspiration? Get moving outdoors.

Think about it. We have more neurons firing in our brain when we are moving than when we are sitting still. This increased brain activity allows you to see problems from another angle and find solutions where you couldn’t see them before.

We give kids breaks at school, so they can focus and learn better, but seem to forget we need these as adults too. So, why don’t you try giving yourself a break today, and who knows, your boss might even thank you 😉.

Castor oil packs. So easy with the right supplies. I picked up this pre-made package at Pure Pharmacy, but you can make it yourself as well with just slightly more ingenuity.

Items needed to start daily packin:

Good quality castor oil - organic, cold pressed, and stored in glass

Natural fiber cloth - add 1-2 T to cloth, depending on how large an area you’re wanting to treat.

Heating pad/hot water bottle - I like this on that’s pictured as it had straps to help it stay in place, but anything will do.

Old t shirt - castor oil stains, so good to put on something you’re not in love with anymore to prevent and furniture or bedding from getting ruined.

Relax for 30 mins, then wipe off. The cloth can be used numerous times and then disposed of. Keeps longest stored in the fridge.
