2025 has been an exciting time of growth, connection and impact for the REACH BC community and team. As we look back on this year, we’re grateful for the support and partnerships that help us move health research forward, improving care for people in BC and beyond.

With your help:
• REACH BC continued to grow, hitting 8500+ volunteers – a 22% increase since 2024.
• People across BC are helping push research forward, including community studies and early phase clinical trials with Providence Health Care.
• We launched a new feature with the BC SUPPORT Unit that enables researchers to share back study results, so participants can see how they’re making a difference.

This could not have happened without you. Thank you for being a part of the REACH BC community — whether you were a volunteer, researcher, patient partner, clinical trialist, or partner. We can’t wait to see what we’ll accomplish together next year.

Expanding B.C.’s clinical trial capacity = better health outcomes + a stronger life sciences sector for Canada ✨ https://bit.ly/48xJ8KU

B.C. has opened a new clinical trials unit at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital — the first in the province capable of Phase 1 trials for non-cancer conditions.

The unit, which is being supported by a new UBC professorship in clinical pharmacology and therapeutics, will help UBC researchers and local biotech companies bring innovative new treatments from the lab to the bedside.

“Enabling researchers to conduct early-stage trials here at home will accelerate the delivery of breakthrough therapies to patients and further fuel B.C.’s rapidly growing life sciences sector,” said Dr. Wyeth Wasserman.

We’re excited to share that REACH BC is now an initiative of Clinical Trials British Columbia.

Since 2020, REACH BC has worked towards making British Columbia a place where patients, researchers, and communities can access and benefit from world-class research.

We do this by bridging the gap between the public and researchers. We make it easier for patients and the public to find out what health research is happening in BC, to connect with researchers, and to participate in health research studies, patient partner opportunities, and clinical trials. At the same time, make it easier and more efficient for researchers to find participants and partners for their research and clinical trials.

We’re grateful to continue this work under Clinical Trials British Columbia, with funding and support from Michael Smith Health Research BC and the BC SUPPORT Unit, which is founded under Canada’s Strategy for Patient Oriented Research (SPOR).

Clinical trials matter because they save lives, shape better health systems, and bring tomorrow’s care to people today. As an initiative of Clinical Trials British Columbia, REACH BC is committed to making that future possible.

Volunteer Opportunity: Participate in the Genetics of Youth Anxiety Study (GAYA)!

REACH BC is excited to inform you of the GAYA study, which investigates genetic risks for anxiety disorders in youth and assesses whether this risk is shared between adults and youth. This study also explores how genetic risk stratification affects treatment response and the optimal ways to support these young individuals.

Eligible participants between the ages of 10-19 years old are invited to complete five core questionnaires, play two games via the GAYA app, and provide a saliva sample. The saliva sample can be collected at home via a kit or at the BC Children’s Hospital research site.

📢 Calling all women aged 50-65!

Wondering how menopause affects your breathing during exercise? Participate in our health research study, "The Effect of Menopause on Breathing During Exercise," and help researchers uncover the secrets of respiratory health in postmenopausal women.

Study Purpose: To explore how low estrogen and progesterone levels affect breathing during exercise at sea level and altitude, and to understand the relationship between these hormones and respiratory muscles.

Study Details:
Day 1: Lung function testing (seated breathing maneuvers) and a VO2max test on a bike. The research team will also confirm your menopause status.
Day 2: Blood draw at UBC hospital to measure hormone concentration, followed by lung volume measurement using reflective markers and balloon catheters while cycling in room air and at simulated altitude.

Eligibility:
Age: 50-65 years old
Accepting healthy volunteers
Volunteer today in health research!
