Why does balance get harder, and what can you do about it?
A client recently mentioned she started gripping the handrail more on stairs. Nothing dramatic, just a quiet shift she'd noticed over the past year.
Here's what's actually happening: ๐ค
Your body relies on three systems for balance. Vision, inner ear, and joint sensors all decline with age. Add in natural muscle loss (especially in our core and ankles) and slower reaction time, and you get a body that's less confident correcting itself when you stumble.
The good news: Balance is trainable! Simple daily exercises can rebuild what time takes away. ๐
Ask your Kinesiologist to develop a 5-minute balance routine you can do at home. It's one of the highest-impact things you can do for long-term independence.

Did you know osteoarthritis is one of the most common conditions we see at Symmetrix?
Many people think managing it means avoiding pain, but a new study in Osteoarthritis & Cartilage shows that treatment involves much more than that...
Exercise, diet, movement patterns, and biomechanics all work together to reduce symptoms. Real progress happens when these elements are coordinated and tailored to your body and goals.
Exercise is the foundation, but it needs to be specific, progressive, and consistent. This is where working with a kinesiologist can help. We fine-tune movements, monitor how your body responds, and adjust your plan so you get stronger without aggravating symptoms. ๐ช
Even small changes in nutrition, load, or movement habits can ease pressure on your hips and knees. Simple gait or posture adjustments can make a meaningful difference.
โจ What we see every day in our studios matches the research:
Personalized movement + consistent guidance = the best outcomes

Symmetrix started in Burnaby the fall of 1992 as founder Terry Stone began training a variety of clients ranging from students, local celebrities, amateur athletes, and even professional hockey players. In 1997 services were expanded to include exercise rehabilitation programming; primarily with clients who were referred from ICBC and the Burnaby-studio was relocated to a private Endowment Land location near UBC.
This year has seen exciting changes at Symmetrix: Kent and Dasha join the Symmetrix team as new owners.
We come to invigorate and steer Symmetrix. Our aim is to continue offering the quality of experience and care you are familiar with, while also bringing new energy to our professional team. Our 5 amazing Kinesiologists and staff are staying with us through the transition.
Dasha is a lifelong learner and is dedicated to serving her clients with the highest quality of care. We are enthusiastic and excited to be part of her team of professional kinesiologists.
You, our clients, make Symmetrix an incredible experience. We are humbled you are choosing Symmetrix to achieve your fitness goals.
