Warrior Focus

I was diagnosed with in March of 2020, a unique moment in world history. Hospitals were overcapacity, standard doctors wouldn’t see new diagnoses, loved ones couldn’t accompany or visit and my arts & entertainment household found ourselves instantly unemployed.

With desperate determination, a life-saving medical GoFundMe and Alternative and private healers willing to see me in person, I treated invasive breast cancer with 95% Alternative methods and have had No Evidence of Disease for the past three years!

They say that illness, injury and other traumas happen *for* you and not *to* you - and with the “right” perspective, you’ll see how your life was blessed by trauma and you are a better person for it. I can’t say I host that perspective.

But one thing I have learned from this unique cancer experience is you never know what your students, audience, colleagues, strangers have gone through or are going through. No matter how healthy and well-adjusted a person may appear, they may have been racked by treatments this week, they may be tolerating long-term physical pain, they may be haunted by traumas, their energy may be struggling just beneath the surface.

Warrior 2 has become an archetypal asana for me to come home to. As soon as I land in the Warrior seat, I become built to hold space for my, others’ - all the world’s experiences. Without judgement, without reaction - just a single breath and the single-pointed Focus of the Warrior.

Keep practicing.

Em-POWER-ing! Completed the Power Yoga and Meditation teacher training with originator of Power Yoga himself, . Students are drawn to Power classes these days and a high percentage are athletes and assertive personality types - that’s wonderful! These people are the ones who need yoga most! But what do we do with them once they’re in our class, teachers? Bryan instructs us on how to keep the YOGA in Power Yoga so it’s not just another type A fitness session and something we can better our wholistic health and wellness through. Thank you, Bryan, for your devotion to the practice of yoga.

Today is my birthday! 26 years ago I stepped into my first yoga class at a pro-training dance studio in NYC. Since, yoga has changed my dancing, my body, my breath and mind year by year. What I consider my yoga practice today has evolved exponentially since that first class. and I can’t wait to see what my yoga practice is like after another 26 years of experience, priority shifts and age.

I’ve been 31 years! Woot woot!

I was chatting with a friend on my FB main page about the benefits we’ve noticed since going Ⓥ that *aren’t* health and fitness based. He said the animals seem to know he’s vegan and he has a closer relationship with them. I agree and added to that - nature seems to know I’m vegan.

I like who I am as a yoga teacher.

That wasn’t always the case. For some time, I thought teaching yoga was a big mistake. At last, over hundreds of classes taught, I’ve noticed small shifts so profound even I’m like, “new yoga teacher - who dis?!?”

I can speak Namaste with a genuine open heart and smiling face, even when I don’t have the time or energy for my own studio practice.

I can exhale fully three times and change my experience, even when I’m triggered by yoga business and politics.

I can witness my body as a precious container carrying ME around, even when teaching proves to be as injurious as a career in dance.

I react less and respond more.

I identify less and connect more.

I judge less and observe more.

I stay curious.

None of these things can be shown off on social media. I can hardly express their meaningfulness when I try. But I feel it. I experience it.

I like the person who is teaching you yoga.

There’s a power in moving together. Dancers are intimately aware of this. It’s called choreography and even when improvised, movement *with others* creates an energy that can carry the mover, amplify the group embodiment, affect onlookers on an archetypal level.

There’s a power in breathing together. Yogis are intimately aware of this. It’s called pranayama and even when performed “alone”, intentional breathing harmonizes one with all, supports group vitality, unifies strength within community.

As a teacher of both dance and yoga, I get the witness this magic in real time and it can pause me in my tracks it’s so magnificent.

Id like to offer: for us dance instructors, a real opportunity lies in choreographing breath into our dancers’ movement: wholistic, deepening, unifying. And for us yoga instructors, an opportunity lies in nurturing a perspective of group asana as a form of choreography: elevated, powerful, archetypal.

So long as we are breathing, we are moving. So long as we are moving, we experience life.
