It's hard to believe that our brand, initially conceived as a "demo" to showcase our revolutionary mandarin peel extraction technology, is now a decade old! Happy National Orange Juice Day and National Candied Orange Peel Day! 🍊🍹🍊

As we celebrate the versatility of the humble orange, it's worth noting that the orange processing industry is a major contributor to the global economy, with the United States alone producing over 3.2 million metric tons of oranges in 2020.

❓Can you guess how many tons of 🍊 peels are thrown away ❓

Always on the lookout for new sources of peel to , we came across this heap of peels while at the Mountain Mandarin Festival last month. Our friends at Newcastle Mandarin Ranch have the busiest booth at the festival without a doubt, always featuring a long lineup of people looking to slurp back a famous Mandarin Milkshake. Once the mandarins are juiced, the peels end up in this bin.

Jason here shared with us just how many peels are produced, most of which get buried or fed to pigs back at the farm.

The festival hosts 30,000 people over the course of 3 days. That's a lot of Mandarin Milkshakes, and a lot of peels! Dr. Andrew Tait is the founder of Tait Labs, an ingredient developer whose mission is to unlock the full health potential trapped within food waste. He believes food waste Is medicine.

Trained as a Ph.D. chemist, he’s taking good science out of the lab and delivering healthy product solutions to customers to help them digest life better. He was awarded the BC Food Processors Association Rising Star and most recently helped his company take home the Plug & Play Japan EXPO award for Food & Beverage.

We are 11 today! WOOHOO! 🥳🍾

👶 On this day 11 years ago we were born with a big idea to change the world. 🌎

🚯 We began on the premise that food waste harbors powerful compounds that could conquer devastating diseases for which there was no cure. 👩‍🦽 The original vision was to develop a drug to treat virally-induced multiple sclerosis (MS) using a chemical found in…orange peels! 👩‍⚕️ 👨‍⚕️🔬🍊

As we slowly pivoted away from the high-risk activities of drug development, we embraced the opportunity to have greater impact as an ingredient developer for food & beverage, pet nutrition, and medical foods. 🍲 🐶

We found a love working with the supply chain, from farmer to processor to retailer, and it’s all about relationships. We are so grateful for the trade organizations, incubators and accelerators who helped us along the way, not to mention the long list of partners - you know who you are! 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 👨‍👩‍👦‍👦 👨‍👩‍👧‍👧🌱

Much like aged Xinhui mandarin orange peel – the “champagne” of digestive aids - we’d like to think we’ve gotten better with age, and much thanks in part to what has entered into mainstream consciousness the last decade:

- Gut-brain-immune axis, “leaky gut” (was dismissed as pseudoscience, now undergoing credible clinical study) 🧠
