March 8-14 is World Glaucoma Week!
This week we will have several posts about important diagnostic tools and treatments we have available for glaucoma.
One of the most important tools we use to detect and monitor glaucoma is Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). OCT imaging detects structural damage early on the optic nerve.
OCT allows us to measure the thickness of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and the ganglion cell complex (GCC). These layers make up the optic nerve tissue responsible for transmitting visual information to the brain. In glaucoma, these nerve fibers gradually thin often before a patient notices any vision changes.
By tracking RNFL and GCC scans over time, we can detect very small structural changes to the optic nerve and intervene early. This technology allows us to monitor disease progression with precision and protect long-term vision.
