Villa Cathay Care Home

Villa Cathay Care Home Villa Cathay Care Home provides person-centered, culturally-oriented care to seniors in Vancouver History:

In March of 1978, the New Villa Cathay of 36,000 sq.

ft., 3-storey building with 150 beds celebrated its' grand opening. Ten years later, the East wing was added for 9,000 sq. ft., 38 new beds. For the past 25 years, the Villa Cathay has been the largest Chinese seniors' full service care facility in North & South America. At the end of the 19th Century, many Chinese, who had completed the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway, came to Vancouver, British Columbia to settle down. However, when they became ill, they could not enter the local hospitals. Fortunately, a Catholic Archbishop set up an Oriental Home on the City's East Side in 1922. The Canadian Chinese will not forget their humanity and compassion. In 1972, the City of Vancouver expropriated the Oriental Home for industrial expansion. Seven families established the New Non-profit "Villa Cathay Care Home Society".

Health Care Assistants (HCAs) are at the heart of our care. Their work goes beyond skill, bringing patience, kindness, and empathy to every shift. By handling daily routines with dignity and respect, and offering a comforting smile in challenging moments, our HCAs enrich the lives of every resident. Their dedication is what makes the care at Villa Cathay truly exceptional.

Last week, we celebrated Health Care Assistant Day, a special opportunity to honor the compassion and tireless work of our HCAs. To show our gratitude, Villa Cathay presented each HCA with a small token of appreciation for their unwavering commitment and care.

Thank you to all our HCAs for the difference you make in the lives of our residents—every single day!

Being prepared makes all the difference.

This week, Villa Cathay residents and staff joined millions across the province in the ShakeOut BC Earthquake Drill to strengthen our readiness for emergencies.

The drill offered a valuable opportunity to review response procedures, practice coordination, and build confidence in working together during an emergency.

Regular participation in drills like this keeps our community ready and confident, as we continue learning and working together to stay prepared.

Villa Cathay recently welcomed Henry Schein, the dental supplier supporting the UBC Geriatric Dentistry Program, for a tour of our care home.

Through our ongoing collaboration with UBC, residents at Villa Cathay receive dental care within our home, ensuring comfort and timely treatment. The visit offered an opportunity for them to meet UBC Dentistry students and see how this partnership strengthens both geriatric dental education and care for our aging population.

We are grateful to UBC Dentistry and Henry Schein for working together to enhance the oral health and well-being of our residents.

Art therapy gives each resident a chance to express themselves in unique ways. Some works reflect cultural memories, while others tell stories of imagination, resilience, and joy.

One resident carefully assembled this vibrant fish from countless hand-cut pieces, turning physical challenges into a celebration of creativity.

Her passion for creating extends beyond the exhibition, as she designs birthday cards for fellow residents and festive decorations that bring colour and celebration to Villa Cathay throughout the year.

With community support, donor-funded art therapy transforms creativity into healing, meaning, and belonging, brightening Villa Cathay every day.
