November 18 marks National Grief and Bereavement Day

Every year, grief touches millions of Canadians, yet many feel alone, misunderstood, or unsupported.
In BC and the Yukon, local hospice societies walk alongside over 85,000 people each year through grief, bereavement, and anticipatory grief support. These community led programs are free, accessible, and essential to health and mental wellness.

Letโ€™s close Canadaโ€™s gap by making space for honest conversations about loss and ensuring every community has access to skilled grief support.

๐ŸŒบ Honouring Remembrance Day ๐ŸŒบ

Today, we pause to remember and honour all who have served, and the families and communities forever changed by their sacrifice. We reflect on the courage, loss, and legacy carried forward through generations.

We especially honour the Indigenous and racialized Canadians who served and sacrificed for a country that did not always see or treat them equally. Their contributions remind us that remembrance must also include truth, reconciliation, and gratitude for those who fought, even when they were not fully recognized.

In hospice and palliative care, we understand the importance of memory, storytelling, and supporting those who grieve. Across BC and Yukon, hospices provide compassionate spaces for individuals and families to reflect, remember, and find comfort in connection and community.

As we honour the lives of those who served, we also acknowledge the ongoing experiences of grief and remembrance carried by loved ones today. Their stories continue to shape us.

๐Ÿ Lest we forget.

Our office is closed today in observance of Remembrance Day. We will reopen on November 12.

๐Ÿ“ Montreal, Quebec โ€“ September 29, 2025

The BC Hospice Palliative Care Association joins colleagues across Canada and around the world in mourning the passing of Dr. Balfour Mount, the "father of palliative care."

In 1975, he founded the Royal Victoria Hospital Palliative Care Service and McGill's Program in Integrated Whole Person Care and organized the first International Congresses on Care of the Terminally Ill, leaving a lasting impact on how healthcare addresses the physical, psychological, social, and existential suffering of seriously ill patients

Dr. Mountโ€™s leadership, compassion, and scholarship shaped the practice of palliative care and continue to guide our work today. His contributions have brought comfort and dignity to countless individuals and families.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and all those grieving his loss. His extraordinary legacy will continue to inspire us.

๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ May he rest in peace.

In honour of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the BC Hospice Palliative Care Association (BCHPCA) office will be closed on Tuesday, September 30, 2025.

This day is an opportunity to reflect, learn, and acknowledge the ongoing impacts of residential schools, and to honour Survivors, their families, and communities.

We encourage everyone to take time to listen, learn, and support Indigenous voices.

With BC facing a growing deficit, nearly 12.6B, smart investments matter more than ever.

With every death impacting 8โ€“9 people and unresolved grief driving avoidable ER visits, caregiver burnout, and mental health crises.
Hospice societies are already delivering community based grief and bereavement supports at a fraction of the cost of hospital care, generating $108.8M in annual system savings through prevention, stability, and volunteer mobilization.

Thatโ€™s nearly $11 returned for every $1 invested. In tough fiscal times, supporting hospice societies isnโ€™t just compassionate and builds our health system, itโ€™s financially smart and supports future budgets.

๐ŸŒฟ Dying to Know Day โ€” August 8 ๐ŸŒฟ

Today, on Dying to Know Day, we join the international movement to open up honest, compassionate conversations about death, dying, and grief. This important day, initiated by the Global Home Funeral Alliance, invites all of us to plan ahead, share our wishes, and build a culture of care around lifeโ€™s final journey.

Talking about death isnโ€™t easy, but itโ€™s vital. By normalizing these conversations, we reduce stigma, empower informed decision-making, and strengthen compassionate, person-centred care across British Columbia and the Yukon.

Across our province and territory, local hospice societies play a crucial role in this work, offering support, education, and comfort to individuals and families before, during, and after end-of-life. They are at the heart of creating communities where these conversations can happen with openness and care.

๐Ÿ’™ Letโ€™s continue to break down barriers, normalize dialogue, and support each other with dignity, empathy, and respect.
