Meet Alan Waterman, our newest media team addition!! He is joining us in Kampala for our mission trip.

————-

I’ve spent nearly five decades in video production and news programming, much of it as a video journalist with CBC News, reporting, shooting, and editing stories that aired on The National, NewsNetwork, and local news, with assignments across North America, Cuba, Southeast Asia, and Afghanistan. I’ve received several national journalism awards and was the first video journalist nominated for a Gemini (now Canadian Screen Award) for Best Reportage.

Currently, I am part-time faculty at BCIT in the Broadcast & Online Journalism Program. I’m also a sought-after documentarian and spend much of my time volunteering my skills to non-profits, such as Operation Rainbow Canada.
This is my first mission with ORC, where I’m joining the Media Team on the ground in Kampala.

I see this as another opportunity to give back to those who have been instrumental in my life. The selfless work of ORC’s medical professionals is so crucial to children and their families around the world, along with their commitment to passing on knowledge and skills to the local doctors and nurses they meet on each mission.

Meet Dr. Rai, our Founder and President! Joining us as lead surgeon on this Kampala Uganda mission trip

—————-

Founder & President of Operation Rainbow Canada in 1998, I am a board-certified Plastic Surgeon and Surgical Director with over 40 years of experience in cosmetic, plastic and reconstructive surgery. I have been on 28 medical missions and am the lead surgeon, taking on both surgical, training and mentoring roles. The Rai Clinic is my plastic surgery and medical aesthetic clinic based in B.C, and I am author of Helping Hands.

Aside from my plastic surgery practice, my time in Vancouver is spent with our Mission Planning Committee to plan future missions. I actively look for opportunities to network with international partners and assess where our services are needed.

I am very passionate about the value we bring to the future of these children and we are most grateful for the support of our friends, our families and our community.

A graduate of the University of British Columbia, I often speak at educational symposiums and my scientific research work has been published extensively. I also served as past President of the Canadian & Northwest Society of Plastic Surgeons and from 1983 – 1999 I was Chief of the Department of Plastic Surgery and Chief of Surgery for the Simon Health Region.

Meet Kathryn! Our Paediatric Anesthesia Fellow joining us for the Kampala Uganda mission trip. To support this mission Kathryn is raising taking on a 10 km run and a HYROX event, and is now training for a half marathon, combining her love of sport with a cause that really matters to her. Here is her fundraising page - https://www.canadahelps.org/en/pages/dreams-drips-and-new-smiles-kt-goes-to-kampala/

My name is Kathryn, I’m a paediatric anaesthesia fellow originally from the UK, currently spending a fellowship year at BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver.
My role on the mission will be to support safe paediatric anaesthesia care, working alongside the incredible anaesthetic, surgical and nursing teams to help children undergo procedures as safely and comfortably as possible.

Outside of work, I love being active and exploring - whether that’s walking, travelling, skiing, or taking on new physical challenges. This is my first medical mission, and it’s something I’ve wanted to be part of for a long time.

I chose to go on this mission because I’m passionate about paediatric care and global health, and I’m keen to use my skills in a setting where access to specialist anaesthesia is limited. I hope to gain a deeper understanding of delivering safe care with limited resources, to learn from the local teams, and to see first-hand the impact that collaborative healthcare can have on children and families.

Introducing Christine! She is an OR nurse joining us for the Kampala Uganda mission.

———————

My name is Christine and I am a Registered Nurse at BC Children’s Hospital (BCCH), where I work on the Surgical and Burn Unit. I have been a nurse for 17 years and bring extensive experience in caring for children and families during some of their most vulnerable moments.

I will be joining ORC in Uganda as a pre-operative nurse, helping prepare patients and families for surgery. I previously participated in a medical mission in Haiti, this will be my first mission with ORC. I am deeply honoured to be part of the ORC team and excited to work alongside the dedicated group assembled by Ryan Kean.

I am passionate about providing life-changing surgical care to children and am eager to support the team in any way possible during our time at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Being part of ORC missions allows me to reach children and families who might otherwise go without access to this care, and I hope my experience, skills, and collaborative approach will make a meaningful difference.
