Meet Dex Hallwood

17 years into retirement, Dex picked up a new passion—woodturning. He transforms fallen trees into beautiful, handcrafted pieces. Dex joined the Greater Vancouver Woodturners Guild (www.GVWG.ca), which is a group of like-minded woodworkers that is always seeking opportunities to support good causes. Their projects have included Beads of Courage boxes—special wooden containers for kids at the hospital receiving beads for every treatment they undergo. 🌳✨

One day, he learned about the Mombasa mission from Dr. Jaimie MacDonald, an anesthesiologist working with the ORC team. Dex was inspired. He handcrafted a dozen colourful wooden tops for children undergoing surgery. 🎨🌀

From passion to purpose. From wood to wonder. This is the power of craft and compassion.

Zawadi Maringa, a 35-year-old woman, has lived her entire life with a cleft lip deformity. “Since I was born, I went to another operation mission with my mom. But my mom ran away because she feared the general anesthetic. I came alone today. I’m happy you welcomed me,” Maringa explained.

With a baby on her back, she arrived quietly at the Utange Field Hospital in Mombasa, Kenya after she heard about the cleft lip and palate camp by Operation Rainbow Canada offering free surgery.

“I came in the hope of being healed and starting a new life with a new face.”

And now, with the help of Operation Rainbow Canada, she does. ☀️🕊️
