New research is shaping the future of kidney care in Canada

As we mark Kidney Health Month, we’re sharing some of the latest research highlights from KidneyLink.ca:

🔹 A new resource supporting emotional well-being for people on dialysis
🔹 GLP-1 medications may offer added heart health benefits for people with kidney disease
🔹 Incremental hemodialysis may help improve quality of life for some patients

Each summary helps break down what the research means for patients, families, and care teams — turning evidence into action.

Shaping research with lived experience.

Through training, peer review, and collaboration with researchers, patient partners help make kidney research more relevant, accessible, and patient-centred across Canada.

Arlene Desjarlais and Dwight Sparkes are two patient partners contributing their lived experience to the Canadian Nephrology Trials Network (CNTN), where patient voices play an important role in shaping research.

Their experiences highlight the value of lived experience—and the important role patient partners play in strengthening studies and ensuring they reflect real-world priorities.

As this work continues to grow, CNTN is looking to engage more patient partners from across Canada.

Canada has the knowledge to prevent kidney disease — now we need to put it into action.

In a recent Vancouver Sun op-ed for Kidney Health Month, Dr. Adeera Levin highlights the need to shift from late-stage treatment to earlier detection and prevention of chronic kidney disease in Canada.

Kidney disease often develops silently, and too many people are diagnosed when it’s already advanced. Earlier action can make a real difference.

The article also emphasizes the importance of equity-focused, community-informed approaches — work that Can-SOLVE CKD is proud to support alongside patients, communities, and partners across the country.

On World Kidney Day, researchers and partners came together to raise awareness about kidney health and the importance of advancing chronic kidney disease research.

At the Roy & Vi Baay Research Event hosted by the Cu***ng School of Medicine at the University of Calgary, Can-SOLVE CKD research was featured during the poster session.

Selina Allu, Knowledge Translation Broker and Implementation Support Practitioner, presented two posters:

• “Strategic visioning of the Canadian CKD Clinic Network: Transformative dialogue through the World Café method”
• “From audit to action: Mapping Can-SOLVE CKD’s IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility) journey”

We’re proud to share that Selina received two poster awards at the event:
🏆 2nd Prize (World Café poster)
🏆 Patient Choice Award

Congratulations, Selina, on this well-deserved recognition, and thank you for your work advancing knowledge translation and meaningful dialogue to advance research and equity in kidney health.

It was also meaningful to see Can-SOLVE CKD patient partner and IPERC member Maureena Loth provide the Land Acknowledgement.

Great to see Dr. Clara Bohm, Can-SOLVE CKD project lead for Mind the Gap (addressing mental health care gaps for Canadians receiving facility-based hemodialysis), speaking on CTV Your Morning Winnipeg about kidney health, screening, and early detection.

Raising awareness about kidney health is an important part of Kidney Health Month and World Kidney Day, helping more people understand their risk for kidney disease and when screening may be important.

Today is World Kidney Day!

Chronic kidney disease affects 1 in 10 people worldwide, often developing silently until it reaches advanced stages. In Canada, millions of people are living with kidney disease or at risk.

This year’s theme — Kidney Health for All: Caring for People, Protecting the Planet — highlights the connections between prevention, health equity, and the environments that shape our health.

At the Can-SOLVE CKD Network, patient partners, researchers, clinicians, and communities are working together to improve kidney care and advance research that makes a difference.

In advance of World Kidney Day, we released a special edition newsletter highlighting patient stories, research updates, and opportunities to get involved.
