When thyroid hormone levels are insufficient due to hypothyroidism, various bodily functions slow down, leading to a range of symptoms, including fatigue.
In addition to fatigue, low thyroid levels may also lead to the following symptoms:
β’ Weight gain and having difficulties losing weight
β’ Feeling cold all the time
β’ Dry skin
β’ Constipation
β’ Hair loss including loss of the outer 1/3 of the eyebrows.
β’ Menstrual irregularities such as missed periods, excessive menstrual bleeding, difficulties getting pregnant and PMS
β’ Acne
β’ Facial and eyelid swelling that is worse in the morning
Hypothyroidism can have various causes, including autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto's disease), iodine deficiency, surgical removal of the thyroid gland, radiation therapy, and certain medications. It can also occur without an obvious underlying cause.
