RSV continues to place the greatest burden on Canada’s youngest infants.

A new national analysis shows that children under six months accounted for nearly half of all RSV hospitalizations and related healthcare costs from 2017–2023.

Swipe through to see the key findings and why early-infant prevention matters.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing threat to our health. Bacteria like E. coli and Klebsiella are becoming harder to treat because they’re growing resistant to antibiotics.

Developing vaccines against them can help reduce the need for antibiotics and help keep our treatments effective for the future.

This interconnected system is known as the One Health approach. It recognizes that the health of humans, animals, and our environment are closely linked.

When antibiotics and other antimicrobial drugs are used in healthcare, farming, or aquaculture, resistant bacteria can spread between water, soil, food, and even air.

Tackling antimicrobial resistance (AMR) requires a One Health approach that protects the health of all. Learn more about the work we’re doing at preventamr.ubc.ca

November 18-24 is World AMR Awareness Week! Today, we’re sharing some information on a new UBC research excellence cluster called PREVENT-AMR.

Antimicrobials, such as antibiotics, are medicines used to prevent and treat diseases in humans, animals and plants. AMR occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites no longer respond to antimicrobial medicines.

PREVENT-AMR is a multidisciplinary group, led by VEC director Dr. Manish Sadarangani, that seeks to tackle this urgent and global public health threat. Learn about our research and what we’re doing to tackle AMR at preventamr.ubc.ca

On , we’re reminded that pneumonia remains one of the leading causes of death in young children worldwide — yet most cases are preventable through vaccination.

At the Vaccine Evaluation Center (VEC), our researchers are working to better understand and strengthen protection against Streptococcus pneumoniae, one of the most common bacterial causes of pneumonia.

Through studies like our evaluation of the Pneumococcal-20 (PCV-20) vaccine, we’re helping build the evidence needed to guide immunization programs and protect children — especially those with complex health needs.

With some vaccines offered in schools and others not, it can be hard for parents to know what’s needed — and when.

In a recent UBC Faculty of Medicine interview, Vaccine Evaluation Center investigators Dr. Manish Sadarangani and Dr. Kevin Meesters discussed the importance of keeping kids protected from vaccine-preventable diseases — both inside and outside the classroom.

💉 In-school vaccines: HPV, Meningococcal, Tdap
🩺 Not in-school: Flu & COVID-19

💙 Tomorrow is World Flu Day!

Influenza viruses change every year — and so does the need to keep our vaccines up to date.

At the Vaccine Evaluation Center (VEC), researchers lead the CANVAS Network to monitor flu vaccine safety in real time, helping Canada stay prepared for each new flu season and making sure our vaccines are safe.

Studies like this one monitor flu vaccine safety in kids, compare trends across seasons, and guide public health recommendations.

The result? More data, more confidence, and stronger protection for everyone.

October is Health Literacy Month 💡

At the VEC, we believe that strong vaccine communication is key to empowering informed health choices—especially for young adults who are often overlooked in public health messaging.

When people understand the why behind vaccines, they’re more confident in the how.

🦠 Meningitis can strike quickly, but vaccines help ensure lasting protection. 💉

This past Sunday, we recognized World Meningitis Day—a reminder of the importance of continued vaccine research and immunization programs that protect adolescents and young adults across Canada. At the Vaccine Evaluation Center, our team is proud to contribute to studies that help improve meningococcal vaccine schedules and strengthen immunity for years to come.

Together, through science, awareness, and collaboration, we can defeat meningitis. 💪

Behind every breakthrough in health and medicine are volunteers who choose to get involved in research. 🌍✨

By participating in a study, you’re helping researchers better understand health, improve prevention, and contribute to the development of future treatments and vaccines. It’s not just about today — your contribution can have a ripple effect for generations to come. 💙

You don’t need to be a scientist to make an impact. All it takes is curiosity and willingness to participate.
