My heart is heavy at hearing of the events in Tumbler Ridge. May everyone involved and affected have the support they need to find some comfort, and a good road toward knowing a sense of peace again. And may we not let this be a flashpoint for creating more division within our communities. (Thanks Shae, for sharing). Updated reporting confirms that the person responsible for the Tumbler Ridge shooting was a 18-year-old who was transgender.
That detail will draw attention.
Yet attention alone does not decide what kind of community we become next.
Violence is always the act of an individual.
Safety is always the work of everyone.
What matters now is simple and concrete:
care for the families who lost loved ones,
steady support for those carrying trauma from this day and continuing to build communities grounded in dignity instead of fear.
It means making sure children do not have access to weapons that allow moments of pain or anger to become irreversible harm. It means making sure vulnerable young people are never left feeling trapped or alone. It means making sure none of us are left in isolation with thoughts that darken without someone there to help carry them.
It means making sure no child is left alone to be turned into an extremist by adult strangers online.
Nothing about this tragedy changes a deeper truth. Like anyone else, trans and non-binary people are part of the ordinary fabric of our towns, schools and families. Ordinary life continues to be built together in kitchens, classrooms and workplaces.
The direction forward is not suspicion.
It is a shared responsibility for making our communities safer, calmer and more human for everyone.
This is how we reduce the chance of violence like this happening again.
