Not only are fatty acids an essential part of a healthy diet, but they can have a positive impact on your mental health, too. There is some evidence that foods rich in Omega-3 can lower stress chemicals that can worsen anxiety. Canned fish like tuna and salmon, as well as walnuts and flax seeds are high in these fats. One study found that students who took fish oil supplements experienced lower levels of anxiety around exam time than those who did not. If you find yourself suffering from symptoms of stress or anxiety, try adding Omega-3s into your diet through foods or supplements. Making healthy choices such as these can be an effective way of decreasing anxiety.

One of the fastest ways to calm down when you’re feeling anxious is to use your senses to become fully aware of the present moment. Next time you are burdened with anxiety, try tuning into your five senses and notice the details of what it is you are actually experiencing in that moment. Pay attention to what you are seeing, smelling, tasting, feeling, touching, and hearing.

Engaging all five of the senses helps us ground in the present moment and get out of our heads—where anxiety tends to overwhelm us.

If you would like more support with freeing yourself from your anxiety, feel free to contact Arunima Sharma, MA, RCC, or any of the other anxiety specialists at Kerry Moller and Associates, and we would be happy to help you. It is possible to overcome anxiety and live a life in a more calm and centred state.

To a new mother, every day can feel like it will never end. Climb Out of the Dark is held on or near the longest day of the year annually to help shine the most light on perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. Thank you to Postpartum Support International, and to everyone who took part in Climb Out marches around the world this past weekend. To the 1 in 7 Moms and 1 in 10 Dads who suffer from postpartum depression, and the 1 in 5 suffering from postpartum anxiety, I want to say: YOU ARE NOT ALONE! Therapy can help, and you can be well again. You don’t have to suffer in darkness. If you feel you may be suffering from maternal mental health issues including perinatal depression/anxiety, mother-infant bonding/attachment, or adjustment to motherhood, I'm here if you need to talk.
