*Using dowels for Schroth exercises*

Poles/dowels/sticks are really common in Schroth Method treatments, because they really help to position your arms and shoulders in a way that maximally helps with elongation and expansion.
Here are some ways to integrate dowels:

🔹Lying on your back or side, dowels can be pressed into the wall for muscle activation
🔹In sitting, dowels can support you to gain more elongation
🔹When you’re free standing (and maybe have resistance of the band), the dowels genteredsome stability and reference points for your body to stay centered

Overall, this arm placement helps to bring your shoulderblade into a more neutral position, and opens up those upper ribs (especially the ones in the arm pit area!) to help with breathing.

At The ScoliClinic, our dowels are 2m (7ft) long, which we got at a local hardware store.

If you’re doing Schroth, do you use dowels?

🔹like learning from different TSC physios
… then join our Schroth group classes!

Class schedule (all ages):

Physio Jerome’s client has been coming to The ScoliClinic for over a year now, and every time he wears his Physio Shirt.

He started his session this morning by handing a package to Jerome and joking “I found this in the elevator, looks like someone dropped it and left.”

When Jerome realized what this client was giving him, the team could hear his excitement from the front desk.

Kudos to Physio Jerome for having this client’s back 🙌🏼

Give your neck and shoulders some love!

Transitioning back into work/school mode usually means more sitting, more commuting, more screen time… and more body tension.

And! A curve in the thoracic region will affect the muscles of the upper back, shoulders, and neck, so those need to be addressed too.

Give your body some love this week - try one of our neck mobility routines on TSC Connect on YouTube, or get a massage that works WITH your curve type at The ScoliClinic.

What is Surface Topography?

We’re dive deeper into our research project!
Surface Topography is another technology we’re exploring: it captures the contours of the body in a very specific way.

A special camera system creates a detailed 3D image of your trunk, showing posture, symmetry, and spinal changes over time, all without radiation!

It measures things our eyes can’t catch, like:
🔹Shoulder angle & height
🔹Side shift & scapular asymmetry
🔹Trunk rotation
🔹Waist asymmetry

We’re researching how these measurements can guide treatment decisions and track progress. Surface topography takes scoliosis postural measurements to the next level. 💙

What is Spinal Ultrasound?

Spinal Ultrasound uses sound waves (not radiation) to create a real-time image of your spine.
🔹The bone reflects the sound waves, which then show up as an on a screen.
🔹 A GPS system captures position and orientation of the machine, then custom software combines that with ultrasound reflections to stitch the images together into a 3D view of your spine from top to bottom.

The best part? It’s safe, non-invasive, and radiation-free!👏

At The ScoliClinic, we’re working with the University of Alberta to research how to further develop the Spinal Ultrasound technology, and see how it can be integrated into scoliosis assessment and treatment plans.

Our researcher Dr. Mahdieh Khodaei performs these quick and comfortable scans at our West Broadway clinic, explaining each step as she goes.

More on this exciting project soon!
