January comes to a close, we take a moment to honour community, culture and belonging.
January marks Tamil Heritage Month in Canada. The first Tamils arrived in Canada in 1983 through government measures aimed at supporting people fleeing the decades-long armed conflict in Sri Lanka.
For more than 40 years, Tamil communities have helped build the Canada we know today through their courage, leadership and social commitment. From politics and health care to entrepreneurship and the arts, Tamil communities continue to enrich our society with resilience and excellence.
Canada is home to one of the largest Tamil diasporas outside Asia, and Tamil culture remains an important part of our shared identity. As we reflect on this history, we also recognize that people of Tamil descent continue to face systemic barriers.
In British Columbia, supporting diverse communities includes strengthening access to equitable, culturally safe care. Through the midwifery model of practice, families in all contexts, including newcomers to Canada, can access safe, individualized, publicly funded maternity care and connections to community programs and supports.
This work is supported through MABC’s advocacy and system-level efforts, and guided by commitments to inclusivity, anti-racism, anti-oppression, dignity, humility and ongoing learning.
