Dr. Peter Centre

Dr. Peter Centre The Dr. Peter Centre provides support for HIV/AIDS care in Metro Vancouver. We do not rehabilitate people to join society. We stand with people to join humanity

At the Dr. Peter Centre we work with individuals who are at the intersection of mental illness, substance use, poverty, HIV and chaotic life.

With Valentine’s Day tomorrow, we wanted to share some appreciation for a partner that truly shows love for community in action. đŸ€â€ïž

At the Dr. Peter Centre, care is often expressed in practical ways: a warm meal, a friendly face, and people who keep showing up. We are deeply grateful to Parq Casino for doing exactly that. Their support of our meal program, combined with staff volunteering in our kitchen, helps make sure participants are met with dignity, consistency, and care.
We also want to recognize two things that stood out this year.

Parq brought several of their funded community partners together for an evening of connection and conversation. That kind of convening is rare, and important. Creating space for organizations to meet one another, share experiences, and build relationships strengthens the whole community.

They also invited our team to lead a Lunch & Learn with Parq staff focused on the realities facing marginalized community members in Vancouver. The openness in that room mattered. People showed up ready to listen, ask thoughtful questions, and learn.

To Karen, Darren, and the full Parq team: thank you for leading with heart, and for being the kind of partner that turns values into action.

Today, we had the pleasure of hosting at the Dr. Peter Centre. A contingent of their employees came to learn more about the work we do, and put together harm reduction kits. An inspiring way to connect the essential research and analytics they’ve conducted with the Centre to on-the-ground impact.

Yesterday, the Dr. Peter Centre welcomed senior leaders from the federal government for a visit focused on learning, listening, and connection. We were joined by the Honourable Marjorie Michel, Canada’s Minister of Health, and Nancy Hamzawi, President of the Public Health Agency of Canada.
During their time at the Centre, they toured our programs and spoke directly with participants about the realities of living with complex, overlapping health and social challenges.
These conversations matter. Seeing care in action and hearing lived experience firsthand brings critical context to policy discussions that too often happen at a distance. We are grateful to our guests for taking the time to engage meaningfully with our community, and to our participants and staff for sharing their experiences with such honesty and generosity.
This kind of dialogue helps move us closer to systems that respond with dignity, coordination, and compassion.

Here's to another trip around the sun! Like any trip, it had its bright and dark spots. But the overwhelming feeling, as we reflect on a year in the rearview, is one of gratitude. Gratitude to our supporters for the generosity, to our staff for their tenacity, and to our participants for choosing to show up, turning our little lot on Comox into a real community.

Thank you to Little Elves Foundation for their generous and long-running holiday gifts. A warm thank you to the Aune Foundation for donating the funds for us to stay open Christmas Day—what a gift, to be able to offer our participants continuity and warmth this time of year. And a special thank you to the Aune family for an additional “Santa Nina” gift for our participants.

We're still reflecting on how special Monday was for our participants and staff. We had the opportunity to honour the community members, friends, and family we've lost. Miss Chantelle Lee shared a deeply moving poem that will now be on display inside of the Centre. Dr. Peter is forever present here and we're so grateful for the community that continues to uplift his memory.

This World AIDS Day, we remember those we have lost. And ask that we continue to remember those still with us.

Today, we held a lock ceremony, encouraging people to write the name of someone loved and lost. Then, we celebrated. With music, with drag performances, with spirited speeches and poem recitals, we celebrated being here together. Wherever you are, whatever your status, we ask that you take a little moment to reflect on loss and celebrate life with us.

It's the best kind of mistake to announce: After some final tallying, an eleventh-hour wave of generosity in our silent auction pushed the total past $200,000!! We love a round number, especially when it means more meals and more life-affirming moments of connection.
