In this reel, UBC PhD researcher and physiotherapist Jem Arnold is testing for a condition many cyclists don’t even know exists: a blood-flow limitation in the iliac arteries (FLIA). It’s rare, but even strong, fit endurance athletes can be affected. This vascular issue can steal power and cause pain or heaviness in the legs when you push hard — yet often goes unnoticed or is mistaken for a muscle or overuse injury.
Jem has worked internationally with cyclists, triathletes, and runners with sport-related vascular conditions, and has helped develop screening tests and treatment guidelines for athletes with blood-flow limitations in the iliac arteries. We’re excited to bring Jem’s research into clinical practice.
