Teams already bring creativity, experience and insight to their work.

The Random Idea activity from ATTIC, Activities for Transforming Teams and Igniting Change, helps teams build on those strengths by creating space for fresh connections and new ways of thinking.

By connecting three unrelated ideas, participants build on each other’s thinking and often uncover possibilities they might not normally explore. The activity encourages curiosity, collaboration and confidence in sharing ideas.

In just 10 minutes, teams can generate new ideas and take them back into their day-to-day work. It works just as well inside health care as it does beyond it, especially when teams are looking for creativity or a new way to approach a familiar challenge.

This week marks the anniversary of the In Plain Sight: Addressing Indigenous-specific Racism and Discrimination in BC Health Care report.

Following the report, HQBC led a provincial dialogue with more than 100 participants, including Indigenous patients, families, caregivers and health care leaders. Through this process, a set of core principles was developed to guide the creation of a safe, accessible and culturally meaningful feedback process for Indigenous patients and families. These principles formed the foundation of Sharing Concerns: Principles to Guide the Development of an Indigenous Patient Feedback Process.

We have now released an updated edition of Sharing Concerns, where each principle includes two new sections: Examples of Actions already taken by BC’s regional health authorities and regulatory bodies, and Recommendations for Improvement to continue strengthening culturally safe and responsive feedback processes. These additions build on the existing content that explains why each of the nine principles matters and what principle-focused action looks like.

Our vision through BC’s Patient Safety Strategy: Your Care, Our Commitment is to create a health care system where safety is felt, lived and upheld in every care interaction.

By working together with our partners, we move closer to fostering a culture of curiosity, compassion and continuous learning, where listening drives meaningful and lasting change in safety.

An important part of this work is learning from each other. Healthcare Excellence Canada’s Leading Safety Differently Action Series supports this by bringing colleagues together from across the country to strengthen individual capacity in patient safety and is open to anyone who wants to make care safer – whether you are leading, providing, or receiving care.

Join a four-month action series designed to inspire you to take action to create safer care and lead safety differently. Building on the Canadian Patient Safety Week 2025 theme of All Voices for Safer Care, Healthcare Excellence Canada’s virtual action series recognizes that everyone – regardless of role – contributes to making care safer and can lead safety in different ways.

Enrollment is limited. Apply by December 1: https://www.healthcareexcellence.ca/en/what-we-do/all-programs/leading-safety-differently-action-series/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=cpsw2025&utm_language=en
