Not every day is uneventful, but it’s a special day if it's stressful and a Breathexperience class is also happening. I bring that stressful event to the class with me. Presumably some childhood reaction has been triggered by the event. In the class I don’t do anything with that experience, just be with it, allowing it to be here just as it is. I allow breath, I sense my rhythm, I move. The experience is no longer taking over my whole awareness, breath and movement are also happening. And by the end of class, something has changed. I have a new resolve. I no longer need to go storming into someone’s office or sending strongly worded emails. I have more generosity around the issue, a wider perspective, maybe even some wisdom has sunk in. And from this place, the present moment, that has in some way integrated that experience, I have a different response to the issue.

Someone asked me “how to not get triggered when listening to a YouTube of something I disagree with”. Short answer of course is simple - simply connect with yourself/your breath. Let me muse some more. When I am triggered by something I am hearing, once triggered I am no longer in the present moment. I have been catapulted back in time to the original issue that caused this pattern to be established. I have an emotional charge and it has been triggered. I react from that place and time. How old was I? What can I do differently? If I know I will be triggered by what I am listening to, I can make sure to bring myself present, bring myself here. I connect with my breath; I connect with that movement that is happening inside me. I am connecting with me. In that moment I am now here. And if I am here, it is really hard to be catapulted to some other place and time by triggering words.

I was on a walk with my daughter. We were having a conversation. It started looping, meaning there were automatic responses happening and not really moving forward. My daughter had raised an issue and her needs were not being met. And I felt this. At that moment, I chose to connect with my breath. To sense it. And my daughter’s immediate response was ‘something just shifted’, and the conversation flowed much better, no more looping. What happened when I connected/sensed my breath? Did a switch go on, to turn on my sensing body that can perceive the movement of breath? Turn on my sensing body that can then also be open to sensing the person beside me? Does it matter the answer? I simply started opening and closing my hands in alignment with the inhale and exhale of the breath that was happening, and something different happened.
